The United States and Canada have combined to win every gold medal since women’s ice hockey became at Olympic sport at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games, and they’ve beaten the other in the finals of all but one of those eight tournaments to determine what country stood atop the medal podium.
So when the U.S. women and Canada meet in a preliminary round-robin match at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Tuesday, Feb. 10, there’s a good chance it will also serve as a preview for a game with even bigger stakes in the coming days. USA vs. Canada is the featured matchup on the Olympic hockey schedule, and perhaps the most anticipated game of the tournament unless the two teams advance far enough to meet again.
Team USA is coming off convincing wins over Czechia, Finland and Switzerland to begin the 2026 Olympic tournament. Canada, which beat the U.S. in the gold medal game in 2022, is also undefeated in round-robin action thus far.
