The Edmonton Oilers endured one of their worst performances of the season during a 3-0 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Monday. They’ve been shut out three times this season, already equaling their shutout total from the last campaign.
Still holding on to their status as Stanley Cup odds favorites at a few of our best NHL betting sites, the Oilers won’t get long to dwell on that stinker in Montreal. They face the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday at the Canadian Tire Centre (7 p.m., ESPN+).
Like the Oilers, the Senators have also lost two straight while struggling mightily to find consistency. Our Oilers vs. Senators prediction analyzes Connor McDavid’s chances of producing a rebound game after his disappointing evening in Montreal. Plus, we offer a high-value Tim Stutzle pick.
Odds via our best NHL betting sites; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale.
Best odds: -106 via Betway | Implied probability: 51.46%
Terms and conditions apply.
If you need a reminder that McDavid isn’t a tireless robot, watch his display against the Canadiens. He mustered just one shot on goal, producing a paltry 27.72% expected goals share and a minus-2 rating.
Leon Draisaitl was just as bad with two shots on goal and a minus-3 rating.
Playing on back-to-back nights should benefit McDavid in this scenario, as it doesn’t give him a chance to think too much about what transpired in Montreal. He’s best served getting back on the ice to do what the superstar does best.
Before Monday’s contest, McDavid fired at least four shots on goal in the previous four games and four of five since returning from a minor ankle injury.
Considering the Oilers are looking for their first win on this three-game Eastern stint after two defeats, I expect McDavid to play more aggressively and employ a shoot-first mentality.
That also aligns with how McDavid usually plays against the Senators. The Oilers’ captain fired at least four shots on goal in seven of the last eight games against Ottawa and nine of the last 11. He’s tallied 42 points (11 goals and 31 assists) in 24 games against the Sens.
A winning $10 bet will yield a $9.43 profit.
NHL picks made Tuesday; odds subject to change.
Best odds: +200 via Betway | Implied probability: 33.33%
The Ottawa Senators’ power play is exquisite on home ice, scoring at an NHL-best 40.6% clip.
And the unit now faces an Oilers penalty kill that’s the league’s second-worst (67.4%). Edmonton’s penalty kill is making solid strikes and has killed off the last 10 power plays. While it will continue to improve as the season transpires, the Senators’ power play has scored four goals in the last four home games.
And I expect the Sens to get at least one against an Oilers penalty kill that’s still a work in progress, with Tim Stutzle playing a pivotal part. He leads the Sens with eight power-play points (one goal and seven assists). A winning $10 bet will profit $20.
Oilers-Senators predictions made Tuesday at 9 a.m. ET.
