After checking all the boxes of an instant classic, the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers return to the ice for Game 2.
The tactical war that was Game 1 saw elite hockey, violent shifts of momentum and a finish for the ages. Connor McDavid (28 points) found Leon Draisaitl, who lit the lamp on the power play in the final seconds of overtime, pulling the Oilers one step closer to the elusive Stanley Cup.
It was Draisaitl’s second goal of the game after he opened up the Stanley Cup Finals with a sinker in the first 66 seconds, sending Edmonton into euphoria. It was the fastest goal to start a Stanley Cup Final since 1976.
Draisaitl’s game-winning goal was his third overtime winner in the 2025 playoffs, tying the NHL record for most overtime goals in a postseason.
McDavid, last year’s winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy, recorded two assists in another stellar playoff performance. Mattias Ekholm, playing in his second game of the postseason, nabbed the game-tying goal in the third period, while Viktor Arvidsson kickstarted the rally with 16:43 left in the second period.
Edmonton goalkeeper Stuart Skinner’s hot streak ran out, allowing three goals. But he hunkered down in crunch time to fend off the Panthers’ methodical attack. He finished with 29 saves on 32 shots.

The Panthers fell just short in their bid to gain the upper hand in what figures to be another arduous series.
Florida scored three unanswered as Brad Marchand and Sam Bennett powered in a pair of goals to make it 3-1 as shades of last year’s dominant series start echoed throughout a nervous Rogers Place.
Since head coach Paul Maurice took over, the Panthers were an astonishing 31-0 when leading after the first or second period. The world’s best 1-2 punch brought that streak to end.
Alexsander Barkov has not scored a goal in his last three games. He had two shots on goal in Game 1.
Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was tested throughout the night. Though he relinquished four, the veteran gobbled up 42 saves on 46 shots.
Teams that win Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals have gone on to win the championship 76.5% of the time.
