Fantasy sports are all about luck. No matter how much you study or how many simulations you run, the players have to go out there and perform on the day; the human element plays a big role.
Especially in hockey, where there are so many fewer stats than football or basketball, it’s all about picking who will put one in the net or be lucky enough to record an assist on an outlet pass. The best you can do is play the matchups and hope the guy you pick is the lucky one.
Let’s look at the teams with the best matchups on Monday and the players who are most involved. Not everyone listed below will be available, but it’s good to compare usage across the same team. Individual and team stats are from NHL.com.
We’ll start with an all-Canada matchup. Toronto ranks 11th in most shots per game allowed and right in the middle in goals allowed. They’re not a team we would be targeting on an ideal day, but it’s a middling matchup that will have to suffice since we don’t have many great matchups today.
We’ll attack both teams in this one. Chicago is 11th in goals allowed per game and 16th in shots allowed. Again, they are a middling matchup and not a team we would go after on a perfect day, but it could be worse.
The Avs have done really well at limiting shot attempts, allowing the third-least per game, but they have still given up the fourth-most goals per game, seeing their opponents operate efficiently rather than with volume.
Another one here where both teams can be targeted with streamers. Utah has a similar profile to Colorado in that they don’t allow a lot of shots (26th) but still give up a lot of goals (eighth). Shots are nice, but goals are better.
San Jose is the only true streaming target we have today: They have allowed the third-most shots per game and second-most goals per game. Opponents like the Sharks are where streamers are born.
