There are just four games on the NHL schedule today. Future Sundays are similarly light; I wonder if that’s a specific effort to not compete with the NFL? Either way, it leaves us a little short on fantasy hockey options.
While I like to focus on great matchups, like those teams who allow both the most shots and goals, we are going to have to settle for just decent matchups today, like teams who either allow a lot of shots OR a lot of goals. Montreal is the only double whammy on the schedule.
Let’s look at teams with decent matchups on Sunday and the players on those teams who have been most involved. Not everyone below will be available, but it’s good to look at player usage within the same team.
Always be sure to check actives/inactives before game time so that you don’t leave one of these guys in your lineup if he ends up not playing. Individual and team stats are from NHL.com.
Both teams here are worth targeting, the only game today in which that’s the case. The Flyers are in the middle of the league in shots allowed, but they have allowed the most goals per game of any team.
Montreal has allowed the third-most shots per game and fifth-most goals per game. The Canadiens are one of the friendliest teams to target early in the season.
The Red Wings are in the middle of the league in terms of goals allowed, but they have allowed the second-most shots per game, just barely behind Pittsburgh for the top spot.
Ottawa ranks sixth in most goals per game allowed despite sitting closer to the middle in shots per game allowed. The Senators had a similar profile last season, sitting more than 10 spots higher in goals allowed than shots allowed.
