Defenseman Grace Tullock (2) skates with a high stick during the women’s hockey game against Robert Morris at Pegula Ice Arena on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, in University Park, Pa. The Nittany Lions defeated the Colonials 5-2.
No. 4 Penn State showed off its goal-scoring ability after answering an early Lindenwood goal with five of its own in Game 1 on Friday. The Nittany Lions returned to the ice following a 6-3 win for their final away game of the regular season.
In their last game away from Happy Valley, the Nittany Lions used four different goal scorers to shut out the Lions 5-0.
Head coach Jeff Kampersal mixed up the lineup a bit in Game 2. Danica Maynard, who usually plays left defense, played her first game at left wing for Penn State. The Lake Country, British Columbia, native had a chance to show off her two-way ability with a smaller bench than usual. Maynard was among the several changes Kampersal made to the lineup.
The Nittany Lions didn’t take long to get on the board first as Grace Outwater shot a wrist shot off the faceoff in her offensive zone only three minutes into the game. Outwater seemingly can’t stop scoring as this tally marked her ninth-straight game with a goal.
Penn State wanted more as Abby Stonehouse sent a quick wrist shot in the slot that beat Madison Bowtell’s right shoulder.
After Lindenwood spent nearly all of the first period in its defensive zone, a spark of offense was shown from the Lions late in the period. Katie DeSa was tested with three scoring chances in close, all of which she was able to fend off as the opening period reached its end.
Unlike at the start of the first period, the opening five minutes of the middle frame were a back-and-forth affair, with both teams spending time in the attacking zone. Both DeSa and Bowtell were successful when tested with early scoring opportunities.
However, after an early surge from both teams, the puck took on a life of its own as both sides struggled to control it. Neither team had any luck developing a rush because turnovers in the neutral zone prevented it.
That was until Stonehouse had a chance to get her second of the game after a turnover in the offensive zone. Both Maynard and Stonehouse found themselves alone with Bowtell. A swift pass to Stonehouse led to a ringing of the post as the forward got all of the crossbar and none of the net.
The Nittany Lions didn’t miss their next chance as Mikah Keller skated into the offensive zone and scored after a wrist shot deflected off a skate and found its way into the net. Keller was one of the lineup changes, starting at first-line center.
A calmer middle frame came to a close after Leah Stecker went to the box for a late tripping call. Lindenwood wasn’t able to capitalize before the buzzer rang and started the third period with 43 seconds left on the power play.
The Nittany Lions came out of the gates firing in the first five minutes of the third period in hopes of adding to their lead, and that they did. Katelyn Roberts skated into the offensive zone with speed and sniped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Bowtell only five minutes into the final frame.
A dangerous surge of offense developed for the Lions after a Maddy Christian penalty put them on the power play. A scramble for the loose puck in DeSa’s crease nearly resulted in the first goal of the game for Lindenwood. The Pawcatuck, Connecticut, native made a sprawling save to keep the puck out of her net.
Outwater was not done scoring. The Pickton, Ontario, native received a pass from Maddy Christian off the boards and sent a no-look backhand in the slot towards the back of the net. This tally ties Outwater for fourth nationally in goals with 23.
DeSa didn’t take the last 60 seconds of the game off with the lead at 5-0. The senior was tested with a flurry of shots before the final buzzer, one being a rebound opportunity that resulted in another sprawling save.
