SALT LAKE CITY – With the Utah Hockey Club’s inaugural season now well underway, fans have had an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the sport for several months. However, at times hockey can be somewhat of a confusing and complex game which requires more of an in-depth knowledge to fully understand.
As part of the hockey 101 series, the following is an explanation of a delay of game penalty, why it’s a violation and what that means for both teams.
According to the NHL, a delay of game penalty is assessed when a player attempts to waste time or draw a stoppage of play.
Generally, a delay of game is called when a skater intentionally shoots or throws the puck out of the playing area, shoots the puck over the glass in the defensive zone or deliberately displaces the net.

If the referees determine that a team or player has been assessed a delay of game penalty, they will receive a two-minute minor.
Notably, in a more recent update to the NHL rulebook, coaches now have the ability to challenge a delay of game penalty for puck out of play.
If the puck grazes the glass, goes over the benches, or deflects off another player before exiting the area of play, it is not a penalty and will be rescinded if successfully challenged by the coaching staff.
New additions have been added to the NHL Video Rulebook, which provides video examples outlining penalties, video review and game flow situations.

According to the NHL, roughing is when a player punches or commits a slamming motion with their hand to an opposing skater’s head or face.
A player can also be penalized for roughing if they intentionally remove an opponent’s helmet during play.
However, any player who yanks, pulls or twists on chin or ear straps to remove a helmet at stoppages will be penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Roughing is a two-minute minor penalty and can never be categorized as a major or game-misconduct violation.
