There were three games that happened in the afternoon, starting in Florida. A back-and-forth encounter between the Florida Panthers and Boston Bruins saw the visitors come away with a 4-3 overtime win. In what was a dramatic game, the Bruins led three times in regulation.
However, the Panthers never relented, finding a response all three times. Sam Reinhart scored twice in the third period for the hosts, including a marker with three seconds left in the period. Unfortunately for them, despite all of the resilience shown in front of their home support, Boston still found a way. David Pastrnak scored with less than two seconds remaining in overtime to grind out a victory for the Bruins.
The other games to take place early on Saturday saw the Seattle Kraken come from two goals down to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 6-2 away. Kappo Kaako got two goals in the third period to help the away side end a four-game losing streak.
In Pittsburgh, the Ottawa Senators dominated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-0 to keep the playoff race very close in the Eastern Conference. Shane Pinto grabbed two goals as the Senators goth their second victory in their last eight. Pittsburgh have conceded 164 goals – the most in the league.
The evening games saw a variety of results in what has been the busiest day of NHL play in 2025 so far. In what was an impressive comeback, the Edmonton Oilers came from behind twice to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3. Teuvo Teravainen and Nick Foligno put the hosts in front in the first period, giving Edmonton much to do.
After Vasili Podkolzin halved the deficit 22 seconds into the second period, the Blackhawks struck again, through Ryan Donato. Yet, by the intermission, it was 3-3, as Adam Henrique and Correy Perry scored to tie the game up. Zach Hyman then got the winner 7:18 into the final period on a power play. From there, the Oilers held on for their 26th win of the season.
In Montreal, a game with few goals saw the Dallas Stars edge the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 in a shootout. Both goals came in the second period, Patrik Laine's power play opener was canceled out two minutes later by Jamie Benn. In what was a largely even game, perhaps a shootout was fitting to decide the winner. That would be Dallas, as Jason Robertson was the only player to score.
Overtime was also required in New Jersey, as the Devils got past the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2. Patience was required by the home team, who led twice in the 60 minutes. But, Tampa did not give up, finding an answer on both occasions. Stefan Noesen's winner 3:19 into the extra period was enough for New Jersey to come away with the extra point.
The largest margin of victory on the day came in Philadelphia as the Flyers battered the Anaheim Ducks 6-0. Six different players go on the scoresheet for the home team as they ended their four-game losing skid in dominant fashion.
In St. Louis, the Columbus Blue Jackets held on for a 2-1 victory at the Blues. There was a goal within the final five minutes of each period, as the guests got goals from Adam Fantilli and Cole Sillinger in the first and second periods, respectively. By the time Cotton Parayko got the Blues on the scoreboard with 12 seconds to go, it was too late. It is now four wins in a row for Columbus as they sit in the last playoff spot in the East.
The all-Canadian clash finished 3-0 in the Vancouver Canucks' favour against the Toronto Maple Leafs. A goal in each period did the trick for the away team, as Brock Boeser, Quinn Hughes, and Kiefer Sherwood did the damage. It is now consecutive defeats for the Leafs, although they still lead the Eastern Conference.
Nikolaj Ehlers grabbed a pair of goals for the Winnipeg Jets in a 3-0 beating of the Colorado Avalanche. Like the Canucks, Winnipeg scored once in each period to get the victory. They stay atop the Western Conference as a result of the victory.
Four different players found the back of the net for the Washington Capitals as they returned to winning ways with a 4-1 result at the Nasvhille Predators. The third period was where the Caps truly came alive, as Ethen Frank and Andrew Mangiapane put distance between the two sides before Alexander Ovechkin sealed it with his 20th of the season. The 'Great 8' is now 22 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's goalscoring record.
As for the New York Islanders, they took care of business against the newest expansion team, the Utah Hockey Club, coming from behind to beat them 2-1 away. Matthew Barzal got the winner with 85 seconds left in the game to make it three wins on the spin for the Islanders.
Three games are going on in the western timezones, as the Calgary Flames battle the Los Angeles Kings, the San Jose Sharks meet the Minnesota Wild, and the Las Vegas Golden Knights take on the New York Rangers.
