Welcome back to another NHL Predictions. Each day our writers here at Last Word on Hockey look at the games and give in-depth analysis. Our team breaks down the key matchups, storylines, and stats, then makes predictions based on how they might play out. For this edition, we will look at the Montreal Canadiens taking on the Carolina Hurricanes. Don’t forget to check out more NHL Predictions, as our writers continue this series throughout the 2024-25 season.

We open up NHL predictions with the Utah Hockey Club visiting the Florida Panthers. Karel Vejmelka is the expected starter for Utah HC, but always check social media before locking in a daily fantasy starter. Utah is 4-4-2 in the last 10 games, including two straight defeats. Clayton Keller leads the team in assists (54) and points (78).
Florida is expected to go with Sergei Bobrovsky in between the pipes for this game. The Panthers are 6-4 in the last 10 games and got a victory in its last time out. Sam Reinart is tops in goals (35) and points (75) for Florida.
Both teams are in need of points, but Florida gets the victory.


Prediction: Panthers win 4-2.

Our featured game of NHL predictions has the Canadiens trying to get back on track against the Hurricanes. Sam Montembeault is the expected starter after Jakub Dobes played the night before. The Habs are 3-4-4 in the last 10 games and lead both New York hockey teams by one point for the second wild card spot. Nick Suzuki is first in assists (52) and points (74) for the Canadiens.
Carolina is expected to start Frederik Andersen in net for this game. The Hurricanes are 8-2 in the last 10 games, but lost in its last time out. Carolina is solid at the Lenovo Center with a 27-8-1 record at home. Andrei Svechnikov has registered 18 goals and 25 assists for the Hurricanes.
Montreal needs to stop the bleeding, but Carolina is strong at home.
Prediction: Hurricanes win 4-2.

TV: TSN3; MSGSN; ESPN+
Our next game in NHL predictions has the New Jersey Devils taking on the Winnipeg Jets. Jacob Markstrom is the probable starter for the Devils, who are 5-4-1 in the last 10 games. Timo Meier has tallied six goals and one assist over the past 10 games for New Jersey.
Connor Hellebuyck is the expected starter for the Jets, who are 7-3 in the last 10 games entering this matchup. Winnipeg is 26-6-4 at home this campaign. Nikolaj Ehlers is nearly averaging a point a game as of late with five goals and four assists over the last 10 games.
The Jets are trying to keep pace for the President’s Trophy and should get the win.
Prediction: Jets win 5-3.

TV: SN 360; Chicago Sports Network; Scripps Vegas; ESPN+
Prediction: Golden Knights win 5-2.
We close out NHL predictions with some prop bets of the night. Let’s go back to our featured game for our choices. For Montreal, take Cole Caufield to score a power-play goal. On the Carolina side, go with Taylor Hall to get the over on 0.5 points.
