NHL Playoffs Live Blog: Carolina Hurricanes Look to Take 2-0 Series Lead – The Hockey News


The Carolina Hurricanes look to take a 2-0 series lead as they take on the Washington Capitals in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. 
The Canes took Game 1 thanks to a Jaccob Slavin go-ahead goal in overtime, winning 2-1 after outshooting the Capitals by nearly triple.
Both teams will have a lineup change as Mark Jankowski is out for the Hurricanes, Jack Roslovic taking his place, and Ryan Leonard is out for Taylor Raddysh for Washington.

(20:00) Can the Canes mount another third period comeback?  
(18:28) Burns turns the puck over and takes a penalty. Crucial kill coming up.
(18:06) 2-0 WSH / Carlson slams home a pretty spinning feed by Wilson. The perfect PK has fallen.
(15:58) Burns’ shot hits some bodies and then eventually the post.
(12:43) Hurricanes with a two-minute offensive shift, but still can’t break through.
(12:07) Aho saves a goal diving into the crease. 
(11:24) McMichael delay of game, Canes to the power play. It’s either score here, or get ready for Game 3 on Saturday.  
(10:34) 2-1, Gostisbehere gets Carolina right back into it.  
(9:56) Just under 10 minutes for Carolina to find another. Will they find a way?
(5:02) Final TV timeout, Canes still needing one to tie. Only line changes are Kotkaniemi and Roslovic swapping spots. 
(3:07) Canes had a 3-on-1 and Hall couldn’t even get the initial pass across.  
(1:59) Andersen to the bench for the extra attacker.  
(1:18) Canes take their timeout with an offensive zone faceoff coming up.    
(0:59) 3-1, Wilson hits the empty net and Carolina will drop Game 2.

Carolina had a strong third period push, but just did not have a good second period. In the end, the difference in the game was Washington getting a breakaway after Canes hit their own player in the throat.   
(20:00) 83 seconds of penalty still to kill.
(18:30) PK comes through and remains perfect for the postseason.
(17:44) Washington strikes first as McMichael scores on a breakaway. Walker’s dump-in attempt hits Gostisbehere in the face, setting up the breakaway.
(12:45) Roslovic rings the post.
(10:31) Beauvillier shanks the puck with a wide-open cage after a bad Gostisbehere turnover.
(9:13) Great look for the Canes’ second line, but Hall can’t get a good stick on it.
(8:15) Another Carolina power play opportunity as Dubois trips Blake. Have to have something here.    
(6:15) The Canes power play is officially a problem again.   
(4:52) Now Orlov is heading to the box for a takedown on Mangiapane. If you’re not going to score on the man advantage, you can’t give one up the other way.
(2:52) It was dicey, but Canes survive.

The Hurricanes were a lot sloppier in the second period. Just not making smart decisions nor shooting the puck enough. Let’s see if they have a third-period goal in them again though.
(20:00) Staal-Martinook-Jarvis-Orlov-Chatfield-Andersen once again the starting six for Carolina.
(14:44) Big hit by Orlov as he shoves down Dowd. Canes forecheck still giving Washington tons of trouble.
(12:49) Carolina getting the first crack at the power play. Dubois for a hook on Staal. Hurricanes need something out of the man advantage this series.
(10:49) Still nothing for the Canes on the power play this series. Wilson used the free hand to drag down Svechnikov halfway through it, but officials let it go. 
(8:14) Slavin denies a Grade-A chance for Beauvillier.
(7:32) Staal sits Wilson down into the Washington bench.
(3:00) Washington finally manages to find some sustained offense after a few fortunate bounces. Canes, Andersen hold down the fort though.
(2:30) Roslovic with a great look directly in front of the Caps net, but he couldn’t get the shot off.
(1:00) Wilson sells out to block a Staal shot on what would have been a good look.
(0:37) Chatfield called for a late hook on Dowd. Penalty kill needs to come through again.
(0:00) Score: 0-0 / SOG 7-6 CAR

The Canes had the same game plan playing out pretty much through one period, before a late Washington surge. Will have 1:23 of penalty to kill to start the second.
