A fight during a game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Columbus Blue Jackets somehow ended amicably when the players agreed to simply stop punching one another.
With three minutes left in the first period of Sunday’s game, Flyers winger Nicolas Deslauriers and Blue Jackets winger Mathieu Olivier decided to drop the gloves. After sizing up one another for about 10 seconds, the two began throwing punches. The fight started off slowly before the two then ramped things up and started swinging wildly.
Then, Olivier and Deslauriers suddenly decided they had enough. The two looked at one another after a flurry of punches, nodded in agreement, and even shared a brief embrace before heading to their respective penalty boxes. The crowd roared in appreciation for the respectful exchange.
Sunday’s fight was yet another example of hockey culture being the gift that keeps on giving. In addition to regularly losing teeth and shaking off injuries that would sideline athletes in other sports, players usually end fights with that kind of respect. Although fights are punished with time in the penalty box, players are still given the opportunity to settle their differences. Compilations on YouTube even show players wishing each other well just moments after viciously beating each other down.
