Welcome to “NHL Goal Chase,” a daily game where fans pick one goal-scorer per day and try to compile the longest streak possible. Multigoal games can also extend your streak by the number of goals scored by the goal-scorer you select.
To help fans make their daily picks, NHL.com’s fantasy staff of Pete Jensen, Chris Meaney and Troy Perlowitz will provide their targets for a potential goal-scorer each day:
Acquired by the Los Angeles Kings prior to the break for the Olympics, Panarin is likely to debut for his new team at home against the Vegas Golden Knights when the NHL regular season resumes Wednesday. Panarin was leading the New York Rangers in assists (38), points (57 in 52 games), power-play assists (15) and shots on goal (158) this season prior to the trade. Since entering the NHL in 2015-16, Panarin ranked fifth in points (927 in 804 games) prior to the trade, and he should spark what has been an underwhelming offense this season; prior to the trade, the Kings ranked fifth-worst in goals per game (2.57) and fourth-worst in power-play percentage (15.6). Per NHL EDGE stats, Panarin ranked in the 97th percentile among forwards in average shot speed (63.81 mph), led NHL forwards in long-range shots on goal (43) and was also among the leaders in midrange goals (11; tied for 10th in entire NHL) prior to the trade.
Jensen’s Feb. 5 pick, Filip Forsberg (NSH), did not score; current streak: 0.
The Utah Mammoth wing leads them in goals (25), even-strength goals (20; tied for 13th in NHL), game-winning goals (6; tied for third), shots on goal (178), is tied for first in power-play goals (5) and ranks third in points (47 in 55 games) this season. Guenther, who has 17 points (nine goal, eight assists) and 52 SOG in his past 16 games, is playing on the first power play with Clayton Keller, Nick Schmaltz and Mikhail Sergachev and could get his frequent linemate Logan Cooley back from injury. Guenther has five points (four goals, one assist) and 23 SOG in his past five games against the Colorado Avalanche. Per NHL EDGE stats, the 22-year-old is tied for fifth among forwards in long-range goals (3), is sixth in long-range SOG (29), tied for tenth in midrange goals (11) and is ninth in midrange SOG (71). Guenther also ranks highly among forwards in high-danger SOG (41; 82nd percentile), high-danger goals (9; 82nd percentile), 20-plus mph speed bursts (160; 97th percentile) and average shot speed (61.60 mph; 94th percentile). The Avalanche are 4-5-2 in their last 11 games and have allowed the ninth-most goals per game over that span (3.45). — Chris Meaney
Meaney’s Feb. 5 pick, Seth Jarvis (CAR), did not score; current streak: 0.
