Toronto came into this season looking to play better defensively; they accomplished that. At the trade deadline, they added the players needed to give them more defensive structure and depth in the lineup. The Maple Leafs are now poised for a playoff run where the Stanley Cup is the goal.
Coming from some of the Trade Deadline fallout was Mitch Marner being asked to waive his no-trade protection in a potential Mikko Rantanen swap. I’d have to imagine that’s not going to assist contract negotiations.
Utah has spent this season figuring out the future core of the franchise, adding players like Mikhail Sergachev, Sean Durzi, and Olli Maatta sent a message: no more rebuilding. There were no major pieces moved at the deadline, and for once, this roster could breathe.
While the rebuilding has stopped, Utah is still looking up at a playoff position. They’re currently 4 points behind the Calgary Flames, who hold the final Wild Card position.

After the deadline drama, Mitch Marner returned to action with a two goal performance against the Colorado Avalanche. It will be interesting down the stretch to see if this deadline swayed Marner in hurrying to take a deal or confidently walking out in free agency. Marner is one of the Leafs best offensive producers, with 79 points in 62 games.
Clayton Keller has seen the Utah bounce, with 76 points in 78 games last season; Keller is likely to surpass that with 72 in 62 so far this season. Another stellar performer this season has been Dylan Guenther, who has really broken out as an impact player on the roster.
