Calgary will try to break through in the upcoming NHL season as it battles for a playoff spot. The Flames barely missed the playoffs a season ago and will be a hungry group this season. Calgary will be without two of its top forwards to start the season, with Jonathan Huberdeau and Martin Pospisil beginning the campaign on the injured list. Head coach Ryan Huska hopes that both are short-term situations and will return shortly.
After coming off another disappointing playoff finish, the Oilers are hoping this is finally their year. Edmonton got some great news right before the start of the season when the best player on the planet, Connor McDavid, agreed to a 2-year, $25 million contract extension, a HUGE discount for the Oilers, which shows McDavid’s commitment to try to help build a winning roster in Edmonton. The Oilers were also able to lock up defenseman Jake Walman to a 7-year, $49 million extension. Edmonton will be a Stanley Cup contender again this season, with the hope that they finally win it all.

Connor McDavid, fresh off his 2 year contract extension, will try again to get the Oilers over the hump. The dynamic pivot doesn’t have anything left to prove individually; he’s only chasing a Cup. The greats of the game all have been Stanley Cup champions, and that is the only thing missing from McDavid’s resume. “The Oil” hopes that changes this year.
