Winners and losers from 2025 NHL Draft first round: Islanders get an impressive haul
The Detroit Red Wings have selected RW Michal Svrcek with the 119th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Svrcek was a productive junior player in Sweden and for Slovakia's national teams. He also got some limited ice time with a top SHL team in Brynas. Svrcek is a very good skater with a high skill level. He creates offense on the move effectively. He sees the ice well and has a very good shot. Svrcek is undersized, though, and for a guy his size, he strays to the outside too much. I don't think he's talented enough to play that way and make it to the NHL.

The Colorado Avalanche have selected Lulea Jr. D Linus Funck 118th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
The Edmonton Oilers have selected LW David Lewandowski with the 117th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Lewandowski started the year in Germany, but came over and was a notable part of a top WHL team in Saskatoon. He was also an important part of Germany's U20 team. Lewandowski isn't dynamic by any means, but he has the speed and skill to contribute at higher levels and be interesting as an NHL prospect. On his best shifts when he's playing with pace and creating with chances, he looks like an NHL player. I wouldn't call him a true playmaker, though, and his effort can be average. For those reasons, I'm unsure if he'll carve out an NHL role, but he has a puncher's chance.
The Buffalo Sabres have selected 17-year-old Rouyn-Noranda G Samuel Meloche with the 116th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Meloche developed well in Rouyn-Noranda in his first season in the Q. His pure numbers don't blow you away, but he played almost every game. The way he moves in the net is highly impressive. He has the quick twitch and lateral explosiveness of a clear NHL starting goaltender and makes a lot of highlight reel saves. In his best games, he looks like a potential NHL goalie. He can be inconsistent, though. He has a tendency to overplay pucks, can be a little erratic in the net and doesn't always anticipate the play well. If he can round out the issues in his play, the pro potential is there, even if he's not the biggest netminder.
The San Jose Sharks have selected D Ilyas Magomedsultanov with the 115th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
The New Jersey Devils have selected 18-year-old Brynas Jr. C Gustav Hillstrom with the 114th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Hillstrom had a solid year at the Swedish junior level and got extended time on a good SHL team, although he wasn't as impressive with Sweden's U18 team. He's a good pro prospect because of his length, speed and having some scoring touch while playing the middle. Hillstrom's straight line attack style may be better suited for the wing, though, as he doesn't make many plays. His compete off the puck is fine but not a major selling point to where you could foresee him being a matchup player. He ticks a lot of boxes to be interesting but it's not clear what he would be in the NHL.

The Montreal Canadiens have selected C John Mooney with the 113th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
The Florida Panthers have selected 18-year-old Frolunda Jr. LW Mads Kongsbak Klyvo with the 112th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Klyvo had a decent year at the J20 level in Sweden. He got some SHL playoff time at the end of the season for Frolunda, and was good for Denmark's U20 team, helping them gain promotion to the top WJC level. Klyvo is a big winger who skates well and plays a direct style of game. He has good hands and can beat defenders one-on-one. He doesn't see the ice at a high level, but he has a strong wrist shot. He can PK and win puck battles even if not overly physical. He has a chance to be a bottom-six winger.
The New York Rangers have selected C Mikkel Eriksen with the 111th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
The Utah Mammoth have selected 19-year-old Minsk RW Yegor Borikov with the 110th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Borikov had a decent season in the KHL in his third draft-eligible season, getting a regular shift for Dinamo Minsk. His playoff performance is what made him intriguing to evaluators, scoring seven goals in 11 KHL playoff games with no power-play time. Borikov is a strong skating winger with good hands and hockey sense. He makes plays with pace and creates at the hard areas of the offensive zone. He has a good shot and can finish from mid-range. He's not overly physical but has decent size. There's nothing special about his game, but he does a lot of things at a quality level and could be a bottom-six winger.
The Detroit Red Wings have selected RW Brent Solomon with the 109th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have selected 20-year-old Tappara C Benjamin Rautiainen with the 108th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Rautiainen is a third-year draft-eligible. He was quite good in Finland's top league and was a top player for Finland's U20 team. He’s a good skater with very good hands and offensive creativity. He creates chances on the move and looks like a potential pro forward. He's not very big or physical, though. He creates with the puck, but I wouldn't call him a true high-end offensive type. With his size and two-way play, that could leave him as more of an NHL tweener.
The Blackhawks' forward prospect pool was somewhat undersized heading into this draft. That's been significantly altered through their first six picks.
Adam Benák's size, paired with his speed and smarts, made him one of the most interesting and also difficult case studies in this year's class.
Benák was selected with the No. 102 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft by the Minnesota Wild.

The Chicago Blackhawks have selected LW Parker Holmes with the 107th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
The New York Islanders have selected 18-year-old Pelicans LW Tomas Poletin with the 106th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Poletin didn't light up the Finnish junior league this season but he was an important part of a top team at that level. He was also a leader for Czechia's U18 team. Poletin's game won't generate many highlights, but he checks a lot of boxes. He's an NHL-level skater who competes hard and can create some offense. He has decent hands and vision and can make skilled plays, but he tries to create chances in a direct way by getting to the net. He endears himself to coaches with his two-way details and work ethic and could potentially be a fourth-line center.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have selected RW Travis Hayes with the 105th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
The Anaheim Ducks have selected 18-year-old Kiekko-Espoo G Elijah Neuenschwander with the 104th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Neuenschwander played well against men in Switzerland this season as a big goalie who moves decently well and can make tough stops versus pros already. Neuenschwander is a smart goalie who reads the play well and squares up a lot of pucks. He competes hard on second chance opportunities and is aggressive using his big frame. He’s reasonably quick, but whether Neuenschwander has the side-to-side quickness needed to make NHL stops is debatable.
The Buffalo Sabres have selected Matous Kucharcik with the 103rd pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
