This is a round-robin tournament, meaning each of the four countries will play three games, or once against every other country. A win in regulation counts as three points, a win in overtime or a shootout counts as two and a loss in overtime in regulation or a shootout counts as one point. A loss in regulation is worth zero points.
The two teams with the most points at the end of the round robin will face each other in the championship at TD Garden on Thursday, Feb. 20.
Of course, tiebreakers can happen in this scenario. If there’s a two-way tie, the tiebreaker goes to the team who won the head-to-head matchup. If there’s a three-way tie, there’s nine possible steps (if needed) to determine who will advance to the championship. It likely won’t get to that point, so here’s the important tiebreakers to know in the event that three teams have an identical amount of points
It’s also worth noting that once a team emerges from the three-way tie, the other two teams' tiebreaker will be decided by their head-to-head matchup. For the full details on the tiebreakers, you can learn more about them here.
