Here’s why I’m backing an Edmonton ML bet below in my Rangers Oilers free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
The New York Rangers roll into Rogers Place looking to find some traction as they clash with the Edmonton Oilers. The Rangers sit at 4-5-2, trying to shake off a sluggish start, while the Oilers come in a tick better at 5-4-2.
Puck drop is set for Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 9:00 PM ET on ESPN+, with both teams hungry for a win before Halloween weekend hits.
Head coach Mike Sullivan’s Rangers have flashed signs of life but can’t seem to string together wins.
They’ve split their last few games, including a tidy 2-0 shutout over Vancouver. Still, inconsistency remains the theme.
Sitting 14th in the Eastern Conference isn’t where this group expected to be — not with Igor Shesterkin between the pipes and a core that should know better.
Meanwhile, Kris Knoblauch’s Oilers are fighting to climb the Western ladder. Their 6-3 win over the Utah Mammoth showed what happens when their big guns actually show up. McDavid and Draisaitl are still carrying most of the load, but Edmonton’s depth scoring has been a little too quiet for comfort.
Historically, the Oilers have had the Rangers’ number, taking both meetings last year. But this isn’t a one-sided script — the Rangers’ physical style and hot goaltending could even the odds if they show up ready.
It’s one of those early-season matchups that might not scream “must-watch,” but the stakes quietly matter. Momentum is everything in late October.

Oddsmakers aren’t buying a Rangers bounce-back. New York sits as +135 underdogs on the Moneyline, while Edmonton is favored at -160. Translation: the market still trusts McDavid more than it does any hint of Rangers consistency.
The Rangers’ last five games tell the story — flashes of brilliance followed by head-scratching letdowns. They blanked Vancouver one night, then got torched 5-1 by Calgary the next.
Consistency isn’t optional in the NHL; it’s currency, and right now, New York’s checking account is light.
We want to hear from you below! Comments are welcome! Give us your picks for this New York Rangers vs. Edmonton Oilers NHL matchup.
For Edmonton, home ice could be the difference. Their offensive rhythm returned against Utah, and despite a few close losses, they’ve averaged 3.8 goals in their last five. If they keep firing, it could be a long night for Shesterkin.
The Oilers have also owned the head-to-head — outscoring the Rangers by two goals per game across last season’s meetings.
The Edmonton Oilers have been a study in volatility. Their recent 6-3 win over Utah highlighted that offensive ceiling everyone knows is there.
However, losses to Vancouver and Seattle reminded bettors that this team can still slip into defensive lapses that make backers sweat.
Connor McDavid remains Edmonton’s heartbeat. He’s tallied 14 points in 11 games, doing Connor things nightly. Leon Draisaitl isn’t far behind with 13 points, including 8 goals — proving once again that the Oilers’ offense starts and ends with those two.
Defensively, Darnell Nurse and Mattias Ekholm have done the heavy lifting. Nurse’s 34 blocks show his willingness to eat pucks, while Ekholm’s physical edge keeps opponents honest. Between the pipes, Stuart Skinner has been serviceable with 150 saves in 7 starts, while Calvin Pickard’s limited action (77 saves in 4 games) gives them a capable backup option.
Ultimately, Edmonton’s fate often depends on whether their defense can keep pace with their stars. When they protect the crease, they look elite.
When they don’t, well — that -160 line starts looking overpriced.
Offensively, New York’s been middle-of-the-pack. They rank 15th in goals (24) and 20th in assists (42). However, they do love to shoot — their 311 shots rank 8th in the league.
The problem?
Too many of those shots come from the perimeter.
Defensively, the Rangers have leaned on physical play to stay relevant. They’re 3rd in hits (278) and 14th in blocks (158), stats that say “tough to play against” but don’t always translate to wins. That grit will be tested against Edmonton’s speed.
In goal, Jonathan Quick has been solid in limited action, going 2-1 with 64 saves in three starts. Shesterkin, meanwhile, remains the workhorse with 197 saves over eight games. When he’s sharp, New York can beat anyone — when he’s not, they look lost.
Recent form? Mixed, as usual. That 2-0 win over Vancouver gave fans hope, but Calgary’s 5-1 drubbing quickly reminded everyone that this team is still figuring it out. The Rangers need a strong start and a 60-minute effort — something that’s been hard to come by so far.
New York Rangers vs. Edmonton Oilers bottom line: The Rangers are scrappy, but Edmonton’s firepower is hard to fade — especially at home.
Here is my Oilers Rangers free pick. Edmonton have been sharp on home ice, maintaining a 60% win rate last season while taking 3 of their last 5 games this year.
That kind of consistency, especially at Rogers Place, makes them a team worth backing in this spot.
Meanwhile, the New York Rangers have hit a rough patch, dropping 3 of their last 5 contests. Although their road form last season wasn’t terrible, it hasn’t been convincing enough to justify taking the underdog price tonight.
Furthermore, Edmonton’s edge in recent head-to-head meetings adds even more confidence to the play. The Oilers’ offense looks faster, deeper, and more balanced, which should give them an advantage over a Rangers lineup still searching for rhythm.
Because of their recent momentum and superior home metrics, the Oilers on the moneyline stand out as the smart value play.
Additionally, my betting system shows a strong correlation between Edmonton’s home efficiency and their ability to convert on the power play. When those factors align, they’re nearly unbeatable.
My system shows the trends all point toward the Oilers taking care of business in front of their fans tonight.
