Estevan’s MRI fundraiser is continuing with the project receiving a bit of help from the southeast’s hockey community over the weekend.
The St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation set up a display at a Big Six Hockey League playoff game between the Redvers Rockets and Oxbow Huskies on the weekend, educating people on the plans for an MRI in Estevan.
Lori Gervais, the Executive Director, says that they’ve seen a lot of community uptake with the project.
“Community support has been unbelievable, so we just thought, you know, in the middle of winter in Saskatchewan, people tend to gather at the hockey rink. So we thought we would join in on the gathering, just to be in front of people with the information for the MRI, just to answer any questions and raise awareness to the fact that even though the fundraising has been unbelievable in 9-10 months, we have raised 74 per cent of the money. $6.5 million is our goal and we are currently at $4.825 [million] and some change. So we really are a long ways into this and it’s going fantastically, but we do want people to realize that we are still fundraising.”
That includes a previous appearance at a game in Carnduff. Scarlett says the teams also helped with this weekend's appearance in Moosomin.
"They were unbelievably gracious enough to donate their 50/50. So anybody that came in to buy 50/50 tickets were made aware that the Huskies were donating their portion to our MRI fund, so that was a fantastic night. It was a great night of hockey and a great night to get out in front of the community and there was $1,290 raised just from the Huskies alone with their 50/50. It was a great night."
It's been a part of their fundraising effort for the foundation to connect with other communities, which Scarlett says has been a success.
"We just wanted to be able to get outside of Estevan because this is an all-of-the-southeast-corner kind of project. It's really beneficial to the entire province if we have an MRI machine here that's going to free up wait times everywhere, but that specifically for our southeast corner for people to save some travel time and some costs and that sort of thing."
They're now preparing for a similar appearance in Carlyle, as their Cougars take on the Moosomin Rangers on Saturday at 8 p.m.
The foundation is also preparing for the Radiothon For Life with Discover Estevan, set for May 21.
