ELMONT, N.Y. — The San Jose Sharks visit UBS Arena to take on the New York Islanders.
Collin Graf and Adam Gaudette and Macklin Celebrini scored, but the Sharks lost 4-3.
3 in: Crafty high-to-middle Orlov to Celebrini pass. Need more of that puck-moving.
4 in: Interception by Orlov, and he jumps up with Gaudette. Good start for him.
San Jose Sharks off to a quick start, carrying momentum from Penguins’ game. Continuing trend of aggressive forecheck, insistent backcheck.
Ferraro penalty: He doesn’t like it, but regardless, momentum swing here. Sharks up 6-1 shots. Need a kill.
Graf goal: That’s momentum! Honestly careless pass by Barzal on PP entry. But credit to Dellandra who jumps on the errant pass, Graf for driving the center lane and holding off Drouin.
8 in: PK’er Goodrow forechecking, takes it from DeAngelo. Isles sleepwalking a little.
Horvat goal: But that’s how you respond. Gorgeous Barzal backhand pass through clogged slot, Horvat on flank wires a perfect PP shot.
Cizikas goal: The trials of a young D. Dickinson simply can’t let that happen in that spot. He’s trying to be patient with puck, but a forechecker stick on stick when Dickinson makes his move. Gotta shake it off.
9 left: Misa hungry on puck as Isles try to exit, forces turnover.
7 left: Skinner insistent puck battle win on I think Mayfield.
Gaudette goal: Great work by Dickinson to pinch and keep the puck in. Brilliant passes by Graf, then Misa. Misa’s first. NHL point!
5 left: Celebrini just pants Pelech for puck, the vet D had no idea what hit him on forecheck. Then Skinner with real puck hunger, all over puck, bats the puck mid-air right at Sorokin, looks like a Michigan.
2 left: Gaudette does too much with the puck high on PP, puts Dickinson on the defensive, Dickinson takes a penalty on Pageau.
Heineman goal: Heineman forces it in, does he kick Askarov’s pad? Appears to be a review and not a challenge. They call it good. Remenda stresses that the PK does not collapse hard enough on Heineman. Maybe you want Askarov to be stronger with his pad there? Apparently puck went in before “kick”?
San Jose Sharks 16-7 shots and still can’t grab a lead. Man…
4 in: Another solid shift from the third line, Gaudette won’t allow an exit. Then Gaudette in front, Graf pass, he’s been great, big stop.
Schaefer goal: Askarov makes a big stop on one side, but on other side, it’s a slow pick-up on Schaefer. While Schaefer wasn’t Leddy’s guy initially, think he’s got to get on his horse there. It was a 2-on-3 down-low and Isles still scored. Wennberg went down to block pass, and no one had the No. 1 pick.
9 left: PP2 not winning the dump-and-chase battles for the puck. One-and-done on the power play, which is unacceptable.
8 left: This the game right here? Great Dellandrea pass to Toffoli jumping on, crossbar then post. Then Desharnais takes a penalty. Not blaming Askarov for all of four goals on 17 shots, but the San Jose Sharks need a hero now.
Big saves by Askarov on this PK. Next, need a big goal.
5 left: Smith found Dickinson for a slot one-timer, big stop.
3 left: Not a good-looking defensive switch backcheck between Orlov and Celebrini.
3 in: Ferraro turn-around pass in NZ wall, hits Skinner is stride walking down slot. Shot high.
4 in: Not killing them, but three straight puck touches by Dickinson-Desharnais loses what was an OZ faceoff win. It happens, yes. But the Sharks, down, need some precision. Dickinson high in OZ, tries to corral puck, but Islanders winger on top of him, forces him out of zone. Feels like maybe he thought he had more time. Then Desharnais on consecutive plays doesn’t make that next play.
8 in: Good zone time by Wennberg line and Desharnais pounds shots here.
Celebrini goal: Starts with Leddy patience with puck in DZ, waits for the line change. Smith takes it, 1-on-4, I like his dump-in decision, he doesn’t win it, but frantic Ferraro wins it on the pinch, give it to Orlov, who finds Celebrini in a soft spot. Celebrini just beats Sorokin. A lot of credit to Ferraro and Orlov here. Ferraro with hustle, Orlov with the patience, doesn’t rush puck to Celebrini, waits for Celebrini to get in a good receiving position.
8 left: PP1 passing too much, PP2 can’t really get set up. Two different sets of problems. Big Askarov save at end of San Jose Sharks power play, not sure what happened on Wennberg entry, maybe Wennberg fumbled and puck went into Dickinson’s skate.
1 left: Orlov by himself up high, 3 Isles around him, felt like he needed more support from his teammates there. They were waiting for Orlov to win 1-on-3 and get them the puck. If he had, great play, but San Jose Sharks not connected there.

I don’t mind this game at all. Two games of outshooting the opposition? That counts for something.
I don’t ever want to see Graf not play again, he and Eklund have been embodying Earn It, all season long. Desharnais was fine; Leddy can kill a play but if he’s made any, I’ve missed it.
God, if we’d only won the lottery.
Well, can’t eat the cake and still have the cake. I believe it’s too soon to tell who we’re going to like better, Scheafer or Misa, plus both are like apples and oranges-hard to compare them as players b/c of their positions. I really, really enjoy watching Misa play, and if he’s going to keep developing his game as he’s now we won’t have much to complain about.
Heartbreaking loss. On the plus side, Sharks have 10 of the top 12 player slots on hockeystatcards. On to the Rangers.
Tough loss but not exactly “heartbreaking”. The Vegas game was heartbreaking.
What a game! That was fun to watch. These young Sharks are gonna grow up together, and these harsh times are gonna make there team bond even stronger. . That being said: Both teams were pretty irresponsible defensively. I love to see the Graf shorty. Dickinson had a huge rookie mistake on the second goal against, which is ok cuz he’s a rookie. I think Wennberg had a few missed reads defensively in front of the net that led to goals. Alot of puck watching and not picking up their man crashing the net. Colin Graf is talking about the… Read more »
Also, I saw Bob Boughner on the bench as an Assistant coach for New York. Jeez… I can’t believe that guy even got a job after his abysmal run with the Sharks. It’s been awhile, but I was not a fan of Boughner
I do like Graf more and more with each passing game. In other news, Detroit got another Pavelski! Their 2023, 7th round, 201st pick is making lots of waves in Detroit. I also like what McLellan said to his players:” that two by four across forehead was the best thing that happened to us”. It would be nice if Warsofsky said that.
I’d never even heard of Finnie until a few days ago. 6 games, 5 pts and +7. Heckuva a start!!
For all the Sharks have drafted high and gotten great talent, getting a really good guy or two from further down the draft class (or even free agent that other teams had given up on) can help a ton. Muldowney, Cagnoni and Pohlkamp among the current leaders on that front in the organization.
Graff.
yup
Good point about the name spelling, It’s definitely a German name, so it should be Graff as you correctly stated. I can’t remember his name on the sweater but Sharks website has it as Graf. Let’s ask him! Either way, I like this guy a lot, his speed, hockey IQ and he seems to be everywhere on the ice.
Huh? I wasn’t responding to you about spelling. I was responding to Zeke about Leaving Graf off his list. I actually can never remember if it’s 1 F or 2. I probably misspelled it a hundred times in these comments. Before this season I would have assumed the website is correct but who knows these days.
Second game in a row the Sharks outskated the other team. And yet again, a fluky goal is a key play. Don’t think that Isles 3rd goal should have counted — Sheg seems to think it went in before the kick — I’m a lot less sure about that. Either goalie interference or distinct kicking motion is what put that int the net. And really, the penalty on Dickinson looked like a weak call. Continue to like Iorio’s game for a guy that young and new to the team. Celebrini missed the preseason and he’s looked a bit off. Until… Read more »
I don’t think it’s accurate to compare Schaefer and Dickinson especially on the teams they are on. The isles are surrounding Schaefer with better players and his strengths fit right in.
Dickinson is on one of the worst D corps in the NHL. He’s had pretty slick plays so far and a few gaffes.
You can easily compare the two. Schaeffer is clearly better. He’s playing at NHL speed with ease (at least in this game), Dickinson is inconsistent on that front.
Dickinson is in a different situation and he really does need to figure out how to limit the gaffes.
Sorry I disagree. You didn’t provide any reasons why it’s easy to compare the two. I believe if Dickinson were on the Isles, he’d most likely have a better start.
And where Dicky was drafted vs Schaef is a big difference. It’s apples to oranges.
Not that hard to compare if you watched the game. You can say the Isles are a better situation for Schaeffer, but the Sharks outskated them by a good margin. While Schaeffer was substantially better than Dickinson.
Its OK to acknowledge the obvious. One could reverse that argument about most young forwards in comparison to Celebrini. He’s just better than all of them — probably have to go back to Jack Hughes, drafted in 2019, to find a young forward comparable to Macklin.
We’re not talking about the Sharks out skating them in one game. We’re talking about Schaeffer’s situation vs Dickinson. I agree that Schaeffer is a better player. I mean, clearly, he was the #1 pick. What I’m saying is, it doesn’t really make sense to compare them both apples to apples. Different situations, Dickinson was drafted later so he’ll be slower to develop, he’s on a very bad team with an even worse defensive corps. Again, if Dickinson were on the Isles, he’d most likely be excelling and would even have more points in 6 games. Honestly, it doesnt make… Read more »
Well, I agree that Dickinson’s play behind net contributed to unfortunate goal but he also gets huge credit for keeping the puck in the OZ and contributed to Sharks goal on the same play. Now, is it just me or others also think that Askarov plays with his body and legs only? I rarely see him using the glove hand and his positioning requires a lot of work and improvement asap. With Ned in goal, this game was Sharks to lose.
Askarov has been really good previously, his AHL playoffs were superb. I’m in the ‘goalies are voodoo’ camp, and you can see a really good goalie go through inexplicable bad times. I’m not worried about Askarov, at least not yet.
I often use the example of Pekka Rinne, who’d have some really fantastic seasons, and every 3rd season or so, deliver a clunker. Juuse Saros seems to have inherited that …
AHL is not NHL. Askarov is still questionable in my mind. He allows too many goals, but in his defense, the Sharks defensive play doesn’t help him. This means we’ve got to score more goals which is the Achilles heel for the Sharks. Good to see them outshooting their opponents but they’ve got a ways to go before I change my outlook on them.
He’s just not playing well. Its 2 games. That’s the whole sample size. Goalies are really tough to predict, so I have no idea if this is a blip, a problem for half the season or if he’s going be a bust. The possible outcomes are about as wide as it gets. Dustin Wolf, fwiw, would have been a deserving Calder winner last season, he was terrific and nearly dragged his team into the playoffs. 5 games into 2025-26 season, he’s 1-5 with an .867 save percentage. There’s an element of voodoo with goalies I have never been able to… Read more »
Of course, I said that line scared me but they might get 2 goals… and they did… kinda 😀
Should have been NO goal due to the infamous ” intent to blow” the whistle
Vinny and Dickinson have been a really solid 3rd pair. I’d like to see them get some continued run together. I’d like to see Leddy in the press box for a while. He’s looked bad all year.
Leddy is better than Deharnais…
Certainly hasn’t played that way this year
They are getting close to a win , each game better and better. They will getv1st win on the road
Rangers have one goal in four home games. They’ll get at least five with the Sharks in there Thursday.
Would you rather just follow a better team? There’s plenty out there to choose from.
Erick, can I ask how you added a profile pic? I don’t know how
Ok funny you ask. I never actually added it; I believe it’s because I signed up/comment with a certain email account and it inherited the avatar.
And this photo is 10 years ago when I got married 🙂
every team but Calgary …

What the hell happened to Askarov in the off season. He went from playing like an elite goalie, even behind a bad team to playing like the ghost of fourgiev. Like what the hell. Would have won this game if he didn’t lay an egg in the first.
Look at Dustin Wolf this season. Goalies are voodoo.
Id say if this trip is winless, Warsobsky is gone.
Doubt it.
Love the effort. Sucks but I can live with this. A break thru feels imminent. Get one and I could see them getting a few. Maybe like 3 out of 5 or something like that. I still think they’re best run will be around the 20 game mark. Eklund is the standard bearer right now. Wish he could actually produce more but hopefully it’s coming. Delly looks like he wants a decent contract. So many good plays. That behind the back pass to Toff was awesome. Should have tied it right there. 4th goal is on Iorio. Why did he… Read more »
