Omaha punched first, but Duluth got the knockout blow, taking game one of the weekend series. The Bulldog’s top talent was on full display tonight, with Ty Hanson netting a hat trick and Zam Plante adding three assists on the night. Duluth extended its win streak to three games, while Omaha dropped its third game in a row, this time a 5-2 loss at the hands of Minnesota-Duluth.
Omaha got on the board first with 13:55 left in the first period on a goal from Joel Plante. Tyler Rollwagen carried the puck into the slot and gave a great feed to Plante, who buried the shot to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Omaha was able to kill a penalty and take that lead into the first intermission.
It didn’t take long for Duluth to get going in the second. Just 1:58 into the period, Hanson scored his first goal of the night to tie the game at 1-1. Less than three minutes later, the Bulldogs took the lead on a goal from Joey Pierce.
19 seconds later, Jacob Slipec tied the game from Omaha when a rebound shot from Myles Hilman came to Slipec, who buried the one-timer. With 11:17 left in the second, Callum Arnott gave Duluth the lead once again on a rebound shot, giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead entering the third period.
Duluth got an early third-period power play, and 22 seconds into the period, Hanson doubled the Bulldog lead with his second score of the night. Hanson then secured the trifecta with another goal with 11:30 left in the game, making the score 5-2.
Game two of the weekend is Saturday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m. in Duluth, as the Mavericks look to avoid their second straight NCHC weekend sweep.
