Maple Leafs fall in Colorado

The Maple Leafs have dropped three straight games, including a 7-4 defeat at the hands of the Avalanche in Colorado over the weekend. Mitch Marner and John Tavares each put two pucks in the back of the net for the Maple Leafs in the loss. The Avalanche went up 4-3 in the second period and never looked back. Mackenzie Blackwood was saddled with his 16th season loss after giving up four goals on 21 Colorado shots on net. Toronto goaltenders have given up five goals or more in three of their previous four games. Despite the struggles last week, the Maple Leafs remain in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 38 wins and are prepping for the postseason.

Tavares on the loss:

“Obviously, a very dangerous team offensively. Skate extremely well. We put ourselves in a good spot, especially [because] we weren’t carrying most of the play through the first 40 [minutes] but defended hard, ‘Stolie’ was great, and capitalized on our opportunities. Just a few too [many] mistakes that led to opportunities for them, and we weren’t able to find another one in the third.”

Key injuries: LW Max Pacioretty and defenseman Chris Tanev remain on IR for the Maple Leafs.

Utah loses in OT

The Hockey Club have lost two of their previous three games, including a 4-3 defeat in overtime at the hands of the Chicago Blackhawks on the road. Utah scored twice in the final period to force the extra period, but Connor Beddard put the game-winning puck in the back of the net in overtime for Chicago. Utah had two solid shots on net in OT but could not capitalize. Goalie Karel Vejmelka gave up four goals on 25 Chicago shots on net and was saddled with his 16th loss of the season. Nick Schmaltz, John Marino and Clayton Keller scored for Utah in the loss. The Hockey Club fell to three games behding the Canucks for the final spot in the Wester Conference Wild Card race. Utah’s offense has struggled recently, failing to exceed three goals in five of their previous seven contests.

Key injuries: Center Nick Bjugstad remains on IR for the Hockey Club.
Insiders Status:

The Hockey Club has struggled against Atlantic Division opponents in their inaugural season, losing at a 66.7% clip. They have also lost over 60% of their games in front of the home crowd. In their only meeting, the Maple Leafs defeated Utah 3-2 at home earlier this season. Utah’s offense has failed to exceed two goals in three of their last four contests.
Toronto has come out on top in 62.5% of their games played away from their home arena this season, and they have won four of their previous six road games, including a 5-2 victory against the Golden Knights in Vegas last week. The Maple Leafs have a significant advantage on offense in this matchup, ranking in the top 10 in multiple categories versus bottom-half rankings for Utah. The stats and trends strongly support a comfortable Maple Leafs victory at home on Monday.
Take the Maple Leafs.
Insiders Status:

Utah ranks in the bottom half of the NHL in average goals scored per game with 2.80 , so the odds of their skaters scoring quickly in bunches are low. The previous matchups between these two squads went under the goal total, with only five pucks reaching the back of the net.
Both squads rank in the top half of the league in multiple defensive categories, including average goals allowed, so look for both teams to limit their opponent’s offensive production. Utah has gone under the goal total in three of their previous four contests and failed to exceed two goals in three of their last four. Their goaltenders have limited their opponents to three goals or less in four straight games. Most signs point to a lower-scoring affair in Utah on Monday.
Take the under.
