The Toronto Maple Leafs were shut out in Montreal on Wednesday despite firing more rubber at Sam Montembeault than a front-line employee sees at a tire factory.
Not only did Montembeault’s 48 saves end the Maple Leafs’ non-shutout streak at 227 regular-season contests, but it also helped secure my Under prediction.
The Maple Leafs face a quick turnaround when they play in New Jersey against the well-rested Devils on Thursday.
The Devils, who are getting slightly shorter Stanley Cup odds than the Maple Leafs, are the favorites to win. Former Toronto head coach and Jack Adams Award odds front-runner Sheldon Keefe will be desperate to beat his old team.
This head-to-head matchup hit the Over in all three contests last season and seven of the last 10 overall.
Our Maple Leafs vs. Devils prediction analyzes whether that trend will continue while offering an Auston Matthews prop for the first time this season.
Odds via our best NHL betting sites; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale.
Being held off the scoresheet for the first time in three years is not how the Maple Leafs envisioned starting the season. The Devils should offer a quick antidote to Toronto’s early snakebitten ways, as the Maple Leafs scored 10 goals in the last two games against New Jersey.
There were 26 goals across the three battles last season between these two teams, an average of 8.7 per game. Despite playing on consecutive nights, fatigue shouldn’t be too much of an issue for the Maple Leafs this early in the season.
Conversely, there’s a decent chance the Leafs will be more dialed in after getting 60 minutes under their belt.
The Maple Leafs were unlucky not to score in Montreal. They hit the post three times and finished 0-for-4 on the power play. It’s hard to imagine their puck luck getting any worse.
The Devils haven’t played since Friday in Prague and shouldn’t be dealing with any residual jet lag. They’ll either face an emergency callup and rookie netminder Dennis Hildeby, or more likely Anthony Stolarz, who turned aside 26 of 27 shots in the loss to the Canadiens.
Stolarz was outstanding on opening night and deserved better than a 1-0 defeat. But his legs will surely be heavy.
Plus, Stolarz allowed five goals in the second game of a back-to-back set last season, the only time he played on consecutive nights during his time in Florida.
A winning $10 bet will profit $8.33.

This isn’t exactly a novel prop pick, with everyone jumping on Matthews to score like Montembeault on a loose puck last night.
Although Matthews is prolific against most teams, his productivity against the Devils is even more impressive. Matthews has scored 18 goals in as many games against the Devils, including four in the last three.
The new Leafs captain registered six shots against the Canadiens and was robbed twice. While it’s bizarre to say in just the second game of the season, it already feels like Matthews is due.
Maple Leafs-Devils predictions made Thursday at 3 p.m. ET.
