Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry appears to be optimistic about the opportunity to bring a National League Hockey team to come to his state.
On Wednesday morning, Landry took to social media to announce that he and U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, the House Majority Leader and Jefferson native, had a call with the NHL on Tuesday.
“@SteveScalise and I had an extremely productive call yesterday with @NHL,” Landry posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I look forward to continued dialogue as the prospect of a New Orleans NHL team takes shape!”
.@SteveScalise and I had an extremely productive call yesterday with @NHL. I look forward to continued dialogue as the prospect of a New Orleans NHL team takes shape!
On Feb. 20, Landry first made his support of bringing an NHL team to New Orleans public.
“It’s time Louisiana has an @NHL Team,” Landry posted. “The economic impact would be substantial and having the Stanley Cup in the Big Easy would be a win for all!”
Landry’s post was inspired by ESPN Kevin Weekes’ report that there was a meeting at the NHL headquarters between league staff and a group interested in bringing a team to the Crescent City. The report did not identify who was a part of the group, and the league hasn’t publicly announced plans to expand the league.
New Orleans previously had a minor-league hockey team, the New Orleans Brass, that played in the Smoothie King Center from 1997-2002, ending the same year the Hornets moved to the city from Charlotte. Louisiana now has two minor-league hockey teams, the Baton Rouge Zydeco and Monroe Moccasins of the FPHL, four leagues down from the NHL. The Zydeco are in their second season, and the Moccasins are in their first season.
The Shreveport Mudbugs of the North American Hockey League also play in the state, but those players do not get paid.
