The Los Angeles Kings head to the American Airlines Center tonight to face the Dallas Stars in a Western Conference matchup that looks straightforward on paper but rarely plays out that way.
The Kings enter at 14-9-9, still trying to figure out who they actually are, while the Stars sit comfortably at 21-7-5 and continue to look like a team built for a long spring run.
Los Angeles has been all over the map lately. They dropped games to Calgary and Seattle, then promptly embarrassed the Blackhawks 6-0, because consistency is apparently optional.
Adrian Kempe and Alex Laferriere have carried much of the offensive load, but trusting this group night to night remains a leap of faith.
Dallas has had a couple of hiccups themselves, including a 4-0 loss to Florida, but they bounced back with wins over Winnipeg and Pittsburgh. Jason Robertson continues to pace the offense, while Miro Heiskanen drives play from the blue line. At home, the Stars usually control tempo and force teams to play their game.
The Kings won the most recent meeting between these teams, but this one comes in Dallas, where the Stars are far more comfortable dictating terms.

This matchup profiles as one where patience and defense matter more than trading chances.
Besides, Dallas has struggled away from home, and that usually shows up first on the offensive side. Generating sustained pressure on the road hasn’t been easy for the Stars.
The Kings, meanwhile, have been involved in a run of close games, often decided by a single goal. Those tight finishes usually come with fewer overall scoring opportunities.
In general, the trends point toward another game where goals are hard to come by rather than freely exchanged. My NHL read settles on Under 5.5, and I’m comfortable backing a slower, grind-it-out type of game here.
