Live updates: No. 1 Michigan vs. No. 2 Michigan State hockey rivalry series – NCAA.com

After a late whistle for offsides, MSU’s Porter Martone followed through on a shot, and the Wolverines took exception to what they determined to be a cheap shot on their goalie.
Michigan’s Josh Eernisse gave him a solid crosscheck in the side, and Martone was given a roughing penalty in the ensuing melee. Both players were given a minor penalty, the first two penalties of the game.
We’ve got a good one brewing, folks. The first period was back-and-forth action at both ends of the ice, with the Wolverines and Spartans trading goals inside the final five minutes. We’re deadlocked at one after 20.
Charlie Stramel got the scoring started for Michigan State, his fourth goal in two games, following his hat trick outdoors against Penn State last weekend. Michigan answered back quickly, though, as Nick Moldenhauer deflected a point shot for the Wolverines’ first tally of the night.
Both of these teams are used to having a lead at the first intermission, but they’ve got their work cut out for them tonight. Michigan is 5-2-0 on the season when tied after the first period, while Michigan State is 3-3-0. The Spartans are a whopping 19-2-0 when scoring first, while the Wolverines are 4-3-0 when their opponent is first on the board.
We’ll see who can hold on as we get further along in this one. Second period action is coming up shortly.

The Wolverines wasted no time tying this game up, scoring less than two minutes after the Stramel goal. T.J. Hughes won the offensive-zone faceoff, snapping it back to Drew Schock at the point. Schock floated one at the net, and Nick Moldenhauer tipped it into the far corner past Augustine to even the game at one.
It’s Moldenhauer’s ninth goal of the season and his fifth in six games.

Charlie Stramel is red hot recently, and he’s showing no signs of cooling off tonight, scoring the first goal of the game on a deflection off a pass from Porter Martone. Stramel now has 17 goals on the season and nine in Big Ten play, including a hat trick and the OT winner last week against Penn State at Beaver Stadium.

We expected a duel tonight, and it has been so far. Both teams have had a couple of decent scoring chances, but Michigan’s Stephen Peck and MSU’s Trey Augustine have stood tall between the pipes through the first 7:45.
Michigan State leads in shots, 6-4, but Michigan had the best chance so far: a cut to the net and a shot in close from Michael Hage. But Augustine was up to the task, shrugging it aside to keep this one scoreless.

The No. 1 Michigan Wolverines host No. 2 Michigan State in a pivotal Big Ten series this weekend. Separated by just one point in the Big Ten standings, the stakes are high for the latest edition of this storied rivalry.
As if that wasn’t enough, this series is full of historic milestones. Friday night’s game marks the 350th meeting between the Spartans and the Wolverines dating back to 1922. These might also be the best two teams in the 104-year history of the rivalry, as the Wolverines and Spartans meet as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation for the first time ever.
Michigan has been ranked No. 1 for 10 consecutive weeks after jumping the Spartans back in late November. The Spartans have hovered in the top four of the poll since then, and are firmly in at No. 2 right now after sweeping No. 5 Penn State in a road series, including an overtime win outdoors at Beaver Stadium.
Saturday night’s game is also the 35-year anniversary and 38th edition of the Duel in the D, where the Wolverines and Spartans head to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit to battle for the Iron D trophy.
These two teams have already met this season: a Big Ten series back in December at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing. Michigan took the first game, 3-0, behind a shutout effort by standout freshman goaltender Jack Ivankovic. Ivankovic was later injured in a Jan. 9 win over Notre Dame and is sidelined indefinitely, likely ending a dominant first season.

The Spartans took the second game of the series, a 3-1 win powered by a two-goal performance from freshman forward Anthony Romani.

Romani comes into this weekend hot after a four-point performance last week against Penn State at Pegula Ice Arena, in which he scored his first career hat trick and added an assist in the 6-3 win over the No. 5 Nittany Lions.
Both the Wolverines and Spartans are among the leaders in most key team stats so far this season. Let’s take a look at how the numbers stack up for the Wolverines and Spartans.
