How does a little afternoon NHL action sound to wet your whistle before Super Bowl 2025 kicks off? You’re in luck as the Montreal Canadiens host the Tampa Bay Lightning (1 p.m. ET, Bell Centre).
The Canadiens have come crashing back to earth, losing seven of the last eight. Meanwhile, the Lightning have won three in a row and enter the contest as road favorites.
Our Lightning vs. Canadiens prediction and picks ride with the visitors, expecting them to make it four in a row.
NHL odds via our best NHL betting sites; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale.
A few concerning storylines provided a minute for pause. The Canadiens not only won both previous contests against the Lightning, but they’re 6-2-1 in the second game of back-to-backs, boasting a 2-0-1 mark at home in such situations.
However, the Canadiens have struggled mightily since their 3-2 home win against Tampa Bay about two weeks ago. Since that Jan. 21 victory, the Habs have lost seven of eight, four at Bell Centre.
Tampa Bay’s -150 moneyline odds don’t offer enough value. In addition, it’s an expensive price to back a visitor. That’s why I opted for the +100 odds on the 3-way moneyline. I can’t see the Lightning being swept by the Canadiens in the season series. Plus, Tampa rolls into Montreal on a three-game win streak, beating the Ottawa Senators twice and the Detroit Red Wings in the last six days.
They’ve won four of the last five, taking nine points from a possible 10. The team’s divergent paths are enough reason to take advantage of the +100 odds, and a winning $10 bet will profit $10.
Best odds: +100 via Betway | Implied probability: 50%

NHL picks made Sunday; odds subject to change.
Point has played an influential part in the Lightning’s recent winning run, firing at least three shots in three of the last four games, including the previous two. He averaged 3.75 shots per game in that stint. His only Under in the previous four came against the Senators, where he had two shots. However, he attempted seven shots in that one.
Point is usually productive against the Habs, hitting the Over in both games against them this season, posting four and five shots, respectively. He has 22 shots in the last six against Montreal, a 3.67 average.
In addition, Montreal concedes the third-most shots per game on home ice (30.4, tied with the Anaheim Ducks.) A winning $10 bet will profit $8.47.
Best odds: -118 via Betway | Implied probability: 54.13%
