Trailing by two goals with less than 4 minutes remaining in regulation (highlights below) against No. 1 seed Richardson/Rockwall (17-1 in the regular season), the Mudbugs scored a pair of goals — the last with 1:54 left — to send a Varsity Silver state semifinal to overtime.
Benton High’s Jackson Rose scored 1:17 into overtime and No. 4 seed Shreveport stunned the regular-season champs.
Sunday, Shreveport will play for a second straight AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League title when it faces No. 2 seed Oklahoma City.
The Mudbugs won a 2025 title in the Bronze division, but jumped up to Silver this season. Mired in last place with just a few weeks remaining, Shreveport needed a five-game win streak to earn the final playoff spot.
Saturday, Mason Stevens (Bossier City) cut the deficit in half and sparked the wild flurry for Shreveport. Byrd’s Hayden Hardy tied the game and set the stage for Rose’s heroics.
Aiden Kerr (Marshall, Texas) made 27 saves between the pipes for the win.
