Post-Dispatch Blues beat reporter Matthew DeFranks joined columnist Jeff Gordon to discuss the state of the Blues heading into their game with Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.
It’s been nearly two decades since the T-Mobile Center (née Sprint Center) opened and while there had been rumblings of an NBA or NHL team being an anchor tenant, those hopes never materialized.
However, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has expressed an interest in being part of an ownership group for a WNBA franchise in Kansas City, so maybe a basketball team will one day call the arena home.
Former Eagles center Jason Kelce hopes Mahomes also will consider helping bring an NHL team to Kansas City.
On the latest episode of the New Heights podcast that Kelce co-hosts with his brother, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, they spoke with Matt and Brady Tkachuk. The hockey-playing siblings wowed fans with their play (and fisticuffs) in the Four Nations Cup.
When the Kelces were done talking with the Tkachuks, a question was posed.
Jason asked Travis: “Should we bring you a hockey team to Kansas City?”
Travis: “Dude, what? Yes. I’ve been on that train for a while. I don’t know if Kansas City loves it as much as I do. We’ve got a minor-league team.”
Jason: “Just have you and Pat Mahomes be part of the team. I mean Pat’s already doing the women’s soccer team. So you can just do a hockey team as well. People will show up.”
Travis responded: “We’ve got a minor-league team, the KC Mavericks.”
That didn’t sit well with Jason, who said: “No, no, no, no, no. We need an NHL team. What are we calling it?”
While Jason liked the name of the Mavericks, who play in the ECHL, he wanted a name specific to Kansas City for an NHL team.
Travis suggested Kansas City Cattle. Jason countered with the Kansas City Bulls.
“I’ve got the Beef,” Jason said. “That’s a great one.”
Travis: “Kansas City Beef? That’s actually great.”
Jason then said he’d be part of an ownership team for an NHL team in KC.
“I’m not going to lie,” Jason said, “if you need a minority investor, I’ll invest in the KC Beef.”
Travis said: “That’s actually gold.”
Jason then asked if Mahomes was a hockey fan.
“Pat’s here for any competitive sport,” Travis said. “He’s here for it all. I don’t know if he’s ever been to a game but he definitely got fired up for the Four Nations, that’s for sure. He was watching that one.”
Expansion doesn’t appear to be on the front burner for the NHL, but should the league add teams, it would be cool to have an ownership group in Kansas City that included the Kelce brothers and Mahomes.
And Kansas City Beef would be a great name.
