Winnipeg Looks to Extend Mastery of Hockey Club

Winnipeg had their three-game win streak snapped as they were beaten at home by Calgary in their previous contest Saturday night. The Jets fell to 31-13-3 on the season and entered Sunday holding the top spot in the Central Division by seven points over Minnesota. Winnipeg enters this one 3rd in the league in goals for as they average 3.51 goals a night. The Jets are first in the league in goals against as they allow 2.40 goals per contest. Winnipeg is 1st in the league on the power play by cashing in on 32.1% of the chances with the man advantage this season. The Jets are 15th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate tied for 79% of their shorthanded situations.

Against Calgary, Winnipeg was stymied by a hot goaltender Saturday night and that proved to be their undoing. The Jets held a 12-6 edge in shots on goal in the opening period and trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard after the opening 20 minutes of play. In the second period, Winnipeg owned an 11-10 edge in shots only to again be outscored 1-0 to trail 2-0 at the second intermission. The third period saw the Jets with a 16-6 advantage in shots though each team scored once, leaving them on the wrong end of the scoreboard as time expired. Adam Lowry got the Jets on the board with his 11th goal of the season at 2:15 off assists from Colin Miller and Logan Stanley. That was as close as Winnipeg would get as they surrendered an empty net goal to close the scoring. Eric Comrie made 19 saves for the Jets, who owned a 39-22 advantage in shots on goal, in the loss. Connor Hellebuyck is the expected starter in goal for Winnipeg here.

Haydn Fleury (knee) and Mason Appleton (lower body) are on injured reserve though Fleury could return here. Vladimir Namestnikov (lower body) missed Saturday’s game and is day-to-day.

Hockey Club Trying to String Together Wins

Utah had dropped three straight and five of their previous six before doubling up the Blues at home Saturday night. The Hockey Club improved to 19-19-7 on the season and stood sixth in the Central Division, 20 points behind the Jets for the top spot in the division. They were 12 points back of the Avalanche and Stars, who are tied for the final guaranteed playoff spot, and six back of Calgary for the final wild card spot. Utah is 24th in the league in goals per game as they average 2.82 goals a night this season. The Hockey Club is 15th in goals against as they allow an average of three goals per game on the year. Utah is 16th in the league in power play success as they convert 21.3% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Hockey Club is 10th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 82.1% of their shorthanded situations.

Against St. Louis, Utah jumped in front early and controlled the game from there as they skated to a victory. The Hockey Club owned a 17-6 edge in shots on goal in the opening period and skated off with a 3-1 edge at the first intermission. After giving up the opening goal of the game, Utah tied the score on Michael Kesselring’s fifth goal of the year, on the power play, at 6:06 off assists from Logan Cooley and Clayton Keller. Nick Schmaltz gave the Hockey Club a 2-1 lead with his ninth goal of the year at 8:25 with assists from Keller and John Marino. Keller made it a 3-1 game with his 15th of the year at 10:31 off an assist from Cooley. In the second period, the shots were even at nine with each team scoring once, giving Utah a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes. After the Blues made it a one-goal game, Cooley restored Utah’s two-goal advantage with his 14th goal of the season at 10:42 off assists from Keller and Juuso Valimaki. In the third period, Utah was outshot 9-7 with neither side scoring, giving the Hockey Club the victory. Connor Ingram made 22 saves for the Hockey Club, who held a 33-24 advantage in shots, in the victory. He is slated to be in goal for Utah here as well.

Defensemen Sean Durzi (shoulder), Robert Bortuzzo (lower body) and Mikhail Sergachev (lower body) have been banged up. Durzi and Bortuzzo are on IR while Sergachev is day-to-day. That puts a major crimp in Utah’s blueline depth. Dylan Guenther (lower body) is out as well.

Insiders Status:

Utah comes in off a victory in their last game but they have struggled mightily against Winnipeg in recent seasons. The Hockey Club’s last win over the Jets came back on November 29, 2021 when the Arizona Coyotes skated away with a 1-0 victory. Utah has been up and down this season: they had dropped five of six before earning the win over St. Louis. Meanwhile, Winnipeg had won three straight games before losing to Calgary. The Jets own the top record in the Western Conference and lead the league in goals against on the season. Winnipeg is a solid 13-8-0 on the road while Utah is 7-11-4 at home. Look for the Jets to down Utah once again to run their win streak in the series to 12 games.
Insiders Status:

Each of these teams have played more to the under this season with Winnipeg posting a 24-20-3 mark to the under while Utah has a 24-17-4 record to the under this year. Winnipeg has stayed under the total in four of their last five games entering this contest. The Hockey Club has been held to three goals or less in eight of their last 10 games heading into this contest. Winnipeg has held their last six opponents to three goals or less and only the Flames hit that three-goal plateau in that stretch. The first meeting this season saw the teams combine for just three goals and that trend continues here. Take the under in this contest.
