EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (AP) — With less than three weeks to go before the start of the men’s hockey tournament at the Olympics in Milan, several of the top contenders have significant injury questions.
One of those looked to be answered Friday as Canada’s Bo Horvat was back practicing after missing 14 of the New York Islanders’ past 18 games. Horvat, who was out with a lower-body injury, had been sidelined for nine in a row but the entire time was tracking toward being healed up by February.

Scottie Scheffler is No. 1 in the world and tied for the lead at The American Express. And that’s not what caused the big buzz. Blades Brown was 6 feet away from becoming the youngest player to shoot 59 on the PGA Tour. The 18-year-old narrowly missed. He settled for a career-low 60 on Friday and is tied with Scheffler going into the weekend. Scheffler wasn’t particularly sharp but still shot a 64 in the second round of his 2026 debut. Brown was playing his sixth competitive round in as many days. He played a Korn Ferry Tour event in the Bahamas that finished Wednesday.
One-time NFL MVP and longtime San Francisco 49ers quarterback John Brodie has died at the age of 90. The 49ers said Brodie’s family said he died Friday. Brodie had a stroke in 2000. Brodie played for the 49ers from 1957-73 after breaking every major passing record at Stanford. He later played on the Senior PGA Tour and won the 1991 Security Pacific Senior Classic. Brodie’s 17 seasons still represent a 49ers franchise record and his 31,548 yards passing rank second to Joe Montana on San Francisco’s career passing list. When Brodie retired after the 1973 season, he trailed only Johnny Unitas and Fran Tarkenton in yards passing.
Oklahoma has hired Roger Denny as its athletic director. Denny is currently a deputy AD at Illinois. At Oklahoma, he replaces the retiring Joe Castiglione. The Sooners have won 26 national championships under Castiglione, whose tenure began in 1998. He also led the program’s recent move to the Southeastern Conference. Denny was the administrator for the Fighting Illini football program and oversaw business operations for the athletic department. He spent 15 years as a practicing corporate attorney.
No. 22 North Carolina is trying to correct mistakes that have suddenly surfaced in the first third of the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule. Notably the Tar Heels gave up an average of 14 made 3s in their first five ACC matchups. That came during a stretch that saw UNC lose three of four after a 13-1 start. The Tar Heels visit No. 14 Virginia on Saturday. That is UNC’s first matchup against a ranked league opponent. It’s also the one of six upcoming games that qualify as Quadrant 1 matchups that headline a postseason résumé.

Bantamweight fighter Cameron Smotherman collapsed Friday afternoon immediately after weighing in and his bout with Ricky Turcios at UFC 324 was canceled. Smotherman made his way to the stage seemingly without any complications. But as he stepped onto the scale and successfully made weight at 135.5 pounds for Saturday’s event, his eyes appeared heavy, slowly blinking twice. He stepped off to his left, wobbling toward the stairs and falling face-first onto the stage in a scary moment. A UFC spokesperson said Smotherman was transported from T-Mobile Arena to a hospital for precautionary evaluations and is being discharged.
MIAMI — Retired Miami police officer Marcos Tomas Perez has been sentenced to three years in prison and must repay the Miami Heat about $1.9 million after pleading guilty to selling hundreds of stolen Heat jerseys, including those worn in games by LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.
Philip Rivers has interviewed with the Buffalo Bills for their head coaching job. It’s the latest twist in a busy couple of months for one of the most prolific passers in NFL history. The 44-year-old Rivers has no previous NFL coaching experience, having worked since his initial retirement from the league as a high school coach in his native Alabama. Last month, he ended his five-year retirement and finished the season with the Indianapolis Colts. Rivers was the fourth candidate to interview since the Bills launched their search on Wednesday. Sean McDermott was fired Monday after going 98-50 and reaching the playoffs eight times in nine seasons.
A late goal from Alan Matturro has given Levante a dramatic 3-2 win over Elche in La Liga. It was Levante’s first home win of the season and came after it went behind to an Alvaro Rodríguez goal after 11 minutes. Pablo Martínez and Adrián de la Fuente put Levante ahead midway through the second half. Adam Boayar equalized for Elche in stoppage time but Matturro’s header from a 96th -minute corner sent the home fans wild. It means Levante has taken seven points in the four games since Luís Castro replaced Julián Calero as coach. It remains second from bottom but is four points clear of bottom side Oviedo and two behind Alaves. Elche is in eighth.
CHICAGO — In the aftermath of trading center fielder Luis Robert Jr. earlier this week, the Chicago White Sox found themselves in a position with some financial flexibility.
NEW YORK — The biggest thing standing between Rick Pitino and the 900th win of his Division I coaching career is his son.
Drake Maye has a chance to accomplish something not even Tom Brady did with the Patriots. Maye is hoping to beat the Broncos in the AFC championship game in Denver on Sunday and lead New England to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2018. The Patriots have never won a playoff game in Denver. They’ve lost all four tries, with Brady going 0-3. New England and Denver both finished 14-3 in the regular season, but the Broncos won the tiebreaker for home-field advantage because the Patriots lost to the worst team in the NFL, the Las Vegas Raiders, in the first game of the Mike Vrabel era.
NEW YORK — Another stunning NFL return could be in store for Philip Rivers.
St. Pauli and Hamburg have drawn 0-0 in their lackluster German derby. Neither side matched the intensity of their fans on a chilly night in the port city. The result at least lifts the home side out of the relegation zone, above Mainz and Heidenheim. However, St Pauli has just one win in 15 league games. Hamburg has not won in five games but is five points above its rival in 13th place.
LOS ANGELES — Fernando Mendoza will enter the NFL draft after leading Indiana to a 16-0 season and its first College Football Playoff national championship, he announced on social media Friday. The quarterback was awarded the Heisman Trophy and is expected to be taken by the Las Vegas Raider…
Paris Saint-Germain has returned to the top of Ligue 1 after a 1-0 win over Auxerre. Bradley Barcola got the goal in the 79th minute. Until then, second-to-last Auxerre had frustrated PSG but it could not hold on for a draw. Barcola’s counterattacking goal has put PSG two points clear at the summit, ahead of Lens. Lens plays third-placed Marseille on Saturday.
LOS ANGELES — LeBron James downplayed any suggestion of a rift between him and Lakers governor Jeanie Buss on Thursday following an ESPN report that detailed how the now-minority owner of the team had started to turn on the Lakers superstar.
No. 21 Duke has regrouped from a 3-6 start to win 10 straight games and return to the AP Top 25. The Blue Devils entered the year ranked No. 7 nationally as the Atlantic Coast Conference title favorite. Their rough start came amid a demanding stretch that included losses to highly ranked South Carolina, UCLA and LSU. Coach Kara Lawson told The Associated Press that the players remained focused on working to improve during the rough stretch. Now the Blue Devils enter the weekend sitting alongside No. 8 Louisville atop the ACC standings at 8-0.

Alabama coach Nate Oats says 7-foot center Charles Bediako, who gave up his college eligibility in 2023 to enter the NBA draft, will play against Tennessee on Saturday. Although Oats called the NCAA system that is allowing professional players to return to college “broken,” he is taking advantage of the loophole. The 23-year-old Bediako practiced with the 17th-ranked Crimson Tide a day after a judge in Tuscaloosa temporarily reinstated the player’s college eligibility and blocked the NCAA from retaliating for his return. Bediako has signed several NBA developmental contracts since 2023, including playing for the Motor City Cruise in the NBA’s G League as recently as last week. He spent two seasons at Alabama before turning pro.
The NCAA unearthed another revenue stream when Division I leaders approved patches for uniforms in a move that could generate millions to fund athletic departments that are looking for new ways to pay players. Beginning Aug. 1, Division I teams can place up to two patches of no more than 4 square inches on uniforms for regular-season games. Those are in addition to the logos already allowed for the uniform manufacturers. Rules committees for the postseason will decide how to handle March Madness, the College World Series and other playoff tournaments.
A former Miami Heat security officer has been sentenced to three years in federal prison and ordered to pay nearly $1.9 million in restitution for stealing hundreds of game-worn jerseys and other valuable sports memorabilia while working for the team. Marcos Thomas Perez, 62, was sentenced earlier this month, according to court records. He pleaded guilty last August to transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce. The 25-year retired veteran of the Miami Police Department worked for the Heat from 2016 to 2021 and as an NBA security employee from 2022 to 2025.
The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back Eric Bieniemy as their offensive coordinator next season. Bieniemy spent a decade with the Chiefs, helping turn Patrick Mahomes into a star. He took over Friday for Matt Nagy, who may become an offensive coordinator elsewhere. Bieniemy left the Chiefs in 2023 for Washington but was not retained. He later coached at UCLA and revived his career in Chicago. The Chiefs’ offense struggled last season, and they face uncertainty with potential retirements and free agents. Mahomes is also rehabbing from knee surgery.
Seattle Seahawks running back George Holani and tight end Elijah Arroyo were activated from injured reserve ahead of Sunday afternoon’s NFC championship game against the Los Angeles Rams. Holani, who rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries in the regular season, could serve as the backup to Kenneth Walker III. Running back Zach Charbonnet, who led the Seahawks with 12 rushing touchdowns during the regular season, is out for the remainder of the playoffs with a knee injury that requires surgery. Holani’s potential return could be key for the Seahawks.
With less than three weeks to go before the start of the men’s hockey tournament at the Olympics in Milan, several of the top contenders have significant injury questions. Canada should have Bo Horvat after the scoring center missed 14 of the New York Islanders’ past 18 games. Potential top-liner Brayden Point’s status may go down to the wire after his right leg bent awkwardly earlier this month. The U.S. already had to make one roster replacement after learning Seth Jones won’t be good to go. Sweden will be without Jonas Brodin and Leo Carlsson and is still hoping to have Victor Hedman, Gabriel Landeskog and others who are banged up.
Longtime TCU coach Gary Patterson has agreed to become Lincoln Riley’s defensive coordinator at Southern California. Patterson was part of the College Football Hall of Fame’s 2026 class announced this month, recognizing his four-decade coaching career highlighted by 22 seasons as the groundbreaking head coach of the Horned Frogs. He is one of just four coaches to win The Associated Press’ Coach of the Year award twice. Patterson replaces D’Anton Lynn at USC. Lynn left the Trojans for his alma mater, Penn State. Patterson could play a major role in determining Riley’s future at USC.
The FBI has opened an investigation into the death of former Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, team officials have confirmed. The Colts issued a statement saying they were “aware of the investigation” but that they had not been contacted by the FBI nor been served with subpoenas. Irsay’s three daughters said in May their father died “peacefully in his sleep.” But in late August, The Washington Post reported Irsay’s continuing battle against a painkiller addiction had led to three overdoses in the five years preceding his death. The Post also reported in August that Irsay was prescribed ketamine, which is most commonly used as a general anesthetic, in his final months and that police were called to the hotel room where Irsay died in Beverly Hills, California.
Much has changed for Cooper Kupp since he was the Super Bowl 56 MVP for the Los Angeles Rams and won 2021 AP offensive player of the year. Not only is Kupp playing for a different team, the Seattle Seahawks, but he has embraced a different role, one in which he is the secondary receiving option to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Nonetheless, he remains a valuable player, and will have a chance to prove his worth against his former team on Sunday with a Super Bowl berth on the line.
Federal education officials say a New York school district is “erasing its Native American heritage” and violating civil rights law by changing its team name from the “Thunderbirds” to the “T-Birds.” The U.S. Department of Education said Thursday that the Connetquot School District should restore the “rightful” Thunderbirds’ name. The Long Island district agreed to change its team name last year in order to comply with state regulations banning Native American sports names and mascots. But the U.S. Education Department says that state mandate violates federal law. The district said it is reviewing the federal finding.
