It’s an interconference battle on the ice as a pair of teams looking to pick up a victory collide in the Beehive State. The Carolina Hurricanes are on the road as they make the trip west to take on the Utah Hockey Club Wednesday night. Carolina comes in off a 5-2 road victory over Vegas in their previous contest Monday night. Utah was blanked 4-0 on the road by Nashville in their previous contest Saturday night. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Hurricanes have won eight of the last 10, including three straight. That includes a 5-1 road victory in the most recent matchup on February 16, 2024 when Utah was still the Arizona Coyotes.

Hurricanes Seeking to Stay Hot

Carolina won for the ninth time in 10 games and snapped their one-game slide by rolling past Vegas in their previous contest Monday night. The Hurricanes entered Tuesday 11-3-0 on the season as they had one game against the Lightning postponed due to the aftermath of Hurricane Milton: they were tied for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division with the Devils. Carolina stands tied for second in goals per game as they put up 4.21 goals per contest on the year. The Hurricanes are 6th in goals against by allowing an average of 2.57 goals per night. Carolina stands tied for 10th in power play success as they cash in on 22.2% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Hurricanes are 10th in the league in penalty killing as they have successfully navigated 83.3% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Vegas, Carolina jumped out in front early and controlled the contest en route to the victory. The Hurricanes owned a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period and skated off with a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. Eric Robinson opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season at 4:24 off assists from Sean Walker and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Later in the period, Kotkaniemi tallied his second of the year at 12:46 off assists from Martin Necas and Robinson. In the second period, Carolina was outshot 13-11 but outscored Vegas 2-0 to take a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes. Jordan Staal made it 3-0 with his second goal of the season, shorthanded and unassisted, at the 3:38 mark of the period. Tyson Jost extended to a 4-0 advantage at 6:13 on Tyson Jost’s first goal of the season off assists from Jaccob Slavin and Jack Drury. In the third period, Carolina was outshot 15-7 and outscored 2-1 though they had enough of a margin to skate away with the win. After Vegas got on the board, Jordan Martinook tallied his fifth of the year with an empty net marker at 14:28 off assists from Staal and Slavin. The Hurricanes gave up a goal in the final minute to close the scoring. Pyotr Kochetkov made 30 saves for Carolina, who held a 34-32 advantage in shots on goal, in the win. Frederik Andersen is slated to get the start in goal for this contest.

Utah Hoping to Prevail at Home

Utah fell for the seventh time in nine games as they were blanked on the road by Nashville Saturday night in their previous contest. The Hockey Club fell to 6-6-3 on the season and stood fifth in the Central Division, 13 points behind the Jets for the top spot in the division. Utah is 22nd in the league in goals per game as they average 2.73 goals a night this season. The Hockey Club is 25th in goals against as they allow an average of 3.40 goals per game on the year. Utah is tied for 25th in the league in power play success as they convert 15.4 % of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Hockey Club is tied for 20th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 76.9% of their shorthanded situations.

Against Nashville, Utah was unable to generate any offense, which led to them coming up short in the Music City. The Hockey Club was outshot 12-4 in the opening period of play and trailed 2-0 on the scoreboard after the opening 20 minutes of play. In the second period, Utah held a 10-5 shot advantage but gave up the lone goal of the period to trail 3-0 at the second intermission. The third period saw the Hockey Club own a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal but they allowed the lone marker of the period to wind up with the loss. Connor Ingram made 17 saves for Utah, who held a 27-21 advantage in shots on goal, in the loss. He is the likely starter between the pipes again for this contest.

Insiders Status:

We have two teams heading in opposite directions right now in this contest. Carolina has won nine of their last 10 games while Utah has just two victories in their last nine contests. The Hockey Club has the rest advantage as they haven’t played since Saturday but the fact remains that they have struggled offensively this season, averaging less than three goals per game. Carolina is an explosive offensive team that is tied for second in the league in goals per game and they just handed the Golden Knights their first home loss of the season Monday night. Look for the Hurricanes to keep rolling and put another one in the win column.
Insiders Status:

Carolina went into Tuesday’s action having seen the under post a 7-6-1 mark in their 14 games this season. The Hurricanes have posted an average total of 6.79 goals per game this season. That number drops down to an average of 6.50 goals per game on the road. Utah has seen the under post an 8-6-1 mark this season in their 15 games this season entering Tuesday night. The Hockey Club has posted an average total of 6.13 goals per game this season. That number falls to an average of 5.83 goals per game on the season on home ice this year. With Utah struggling offensively, this game likely falls short of the total as the Hurricanes clamp down defensively.
