The Washington Capitals are experiencing their worst patch of the season, having lost five of the last seven. However, with their captain making history over the weekend, perhaps it can get back to business as usual in the nation’s capital as they focus on the task at hand tonight, the Carolina Hurricanes.

The most brilliant distraction of a generation is behind the Caps, as Alex Ovechkin surpassed the Great One to become the Greatest One. They should now be able to concentrate on playing hockey, something they haven’t done very well in the last couple of weeks.
While I have no doubt Spencer Carbery has eyes on resting some of his top dogs in the last couple of games, he should go with his full lineup until the Caps start playing the type of hockey that made them a Stanley Cup odds contender.
I expect that road to recovery to start tonight against the Hurricanes, who have lost three in a row to non-playoff teams after going on a 12-2-0 run.
In the current three-game losing skid, Rod Brind’Amour’s squad conceded five goals in successive contests for the first time since the end of November.
The fact that the Hurricanes and Capitals are locked into position for the postseason shouldn’t negatively impact the game, with both teams using it as a dress rehearsal for when it counts for real. I expect a much closer clash than the last time they met in Carolina just over a week ago, with the Capitals prevailing.

Jarvis has been on a rampage recently, hitting the Over in five straight. He’s averaging 5.2 shots in that stretch. Since the trade deadline when Mikko Rantanen was shipped off, Jarvis has at least three shots in 10 of 14 games. He’s also been productive against the Capitals lately, hitting the Over in the last three meetings.

I’ve hit paydirt in consecutive games where I’ve backed Strome to secure at least one helper, so I’m going back to the assist maestro one more time. He assisted on Ovechkin’s record-setting 895th goal and enters tonight’s game on a five-game assist run, notching six.
He’s been excellent in the offensive zone and on the power play, and I expect that to continue even though he doesn’t have to force-feed the Great 8 as much anymore.

He’s also been pretty reliable when it comes to testing the opposing goaltender at least twice, hitting the Over in three of the previous five games. While the opening odds listed these teams as equals on the moneyline at -110, that isn’t the case in the hours leading up to the puck drop. The visiting Hurricanes are sizable -152 moneyline favorites over the Capitals in tonight’s game. The spread and total have remained in the same ballpark.
