DETROIT — After a couple of tough losses over the weekend, the Detroit Red Wings are hoping for a statement win on Wednesday night when they host the Winnipeg Jets.
Following a three-game winning streak, the Red Wings took a step back with a couple of tough games last weekend. They were unable to find the necessary offense in a loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, before finding themselves in a close battle with the defending Western Conference champions, the Edmonton Oilers, on Sunday. Though the Wings had big goals from Andrew Copp and JT Compher, it was enough as Leon Draisaitl scored twice for Edmonton, including the game-winner in overtime.
Yet, Detroit has to like how hard they played against a talented Oilers roster, and the fact they are .500 after their slow start is something worth touting.
The Jets were the hottest team in the NHL, surprising everyone by winning each of their first eight games. Their undefeated run was put to an end on Monday night when they fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs, but if the way Winnipeg has started is proof of anything, they are going to be a tough team to beat this year.
This will be the first of two meetings this season between the Wings and Jets. Dating back to the 2022-23 season, Winnipeg has won three consecutive matchups against Detroit.
