DETROIT — The hottest team in the NHL is playing like the best it has in years. On Tuesday night, the Detroit Red Wings will try and extend their win streak when they host the San Jose Sharks.
The Red Wings are playing their best hockey since 2012. With an impressive 6-2 win over the Seattle Kraken on Sunday, the team has won seven straight games for the first time in 13 years. The streak, which began prior to the New Year, has seen Detroit beat the likes of the Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets. The only notable difference for the Wings’ win on Sunday was that it was the first victory during this stretch in which they won by more than two goals.
Detroit is up to sixth in the Atlantic Division, and is just two points back of the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Sharks are in the midst of their rebuild, but brighter days seem to be in the future for the franchise. Last year’s first-overall pick, Macklin Celebrini, headlines a young core that also includes Will Smith and Yaroslav Askarov, which is expected to help restore the Sharks to its past glory. For now, San Jose is looking to end a three-game losing skid.
This is the first of two meetings between the Wings and Sharks. The two sides split the regular-season series last year.
