DETROIT — Two divisional rivals who are fighting for a Wild Card spot lock horns on Tuesday night in Hockeytown as the Detroit Red Wings get set to host the Ottawa Senators.
Quietly, the Red Wings are one of the hottest teams in the NHL. Since Todd McLellan’s first game as head coach, Detroit has caught fire and is closing in on a postseason position. The team has won four straight games, including a statement 4-2 victory, on the road, against the top team in the league, the Winnipeg Jets.
The team has played with a renewed sense of confidence over the last, with the offense clicking and getting some timely saves to move up them up the Eastern Conference standings.
Ottawa has been dealing with an injury bug, including losing starting goaltender Linus Ullmark for the next week or so. The team has lost four of its past five games, including being shutout, 4-0, at the hands of the St. Louis Blues last Friday.
Heading into Tuesday night, the Wings are seventh in the Atlantic Division, three points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the last Wild Card spot in the conference. Ottawa, sitting fifth in the division, are 12 points back of the first-place Toronto Maple Leafs, and one point back of the Habs.
This is the second of four matchups this season between the Wings and Sens. Ottawa won the first meeting in Ontario last month.
