DETROIT — In the final game of their brief three-game homestand, the Detroit Red Wings get set for a tough test when they welcome the Los Angeles Kings to town on Monday night.
The Red Wings might not have had the most enjoyable venture in their most recent road trip, winning just one of four games, but they have definitely bounced back since returning home. After a big win over the Montreal Canadiens, Detroit, behind a 28-save shutout from Cam Talbot, took down the Tampa Bay Lightning just a week removed from losing to the Bolts in Florida.
With another important road swing on the horizon, picking up wins on home is crucial for a Red Wings team still trying to claw their way back into the playoff race. Heading into Monday night, the Wings are still seventh in the Atlantic Division, and remain four points back of the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Kings are sitting in a much more comfortable spot than Detroit. Thanks to the team’s solid defensive structure, and solid play by the likes of goaltender Darcy Kuemper and Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles has hung around near the top of the Pacific Division.
The Kings are third in the Pacific, seven points back of the first-place Edmonton Oilers.
This is the second and final meeting this season between the Wings and Kings. L.A. won the first meeting in Hollywood back in November.
