Will Ferrell brought smiles to his fans’ faces as he was spotted in a Buddy the Elf costume at the NHL game on Sunday. The costume was a nod to his character in the classic Christmas movie Elf.
In images circulating online, he can be seen sporting the green outfit and hat, with an unlit cigarette in his mouth and a drink in his hands at the game between the Los Angeles Kings and Philadephia Flyers. However, in stark contrast to his character in the film, he had a deadpan look to him when cameras tried to take his photos.
Will Ferrel’s Elf came out in November 2003. Ferrell, now 57, was born in July 1967. This places his age at the time of the movie’s release at around 36 years old. As for his character, Buddy, in the film, ScreenRant places him to be 30 years old. This means that in this week’s NFL game, Buddy was about 51 years old.
Over 20 years since the movie was released, the comedian revived his character for the game. In images going viral, he can be seen sitting next to his wife, Viveca Paulin, and one of his sons. Given the years past, however, Will Ferrel looked like a more worn-out, grumpy version of his happy-go-lucky character.
As reported by Billboard, Carrlyn Bathe, who was reporting for FanDuel Sports Network on-site, says Will Ferrell told her that “It was a tough holiday season,” referring to his grizzly looks.
Lucky for Buddy, or Ferrell, it worked out as the Kings ended up winning the face-off that day by 5-4. At a later point, Ferrell was seen celebrating with his drink in his hand. He has long been a supporter of the Kings, and just this April, the official NHL and Kings account uploaded a joint post of Ferrell, and the caption read:
Ferrell’s outing comes on the heels of his infamous Ultimate DJ House Party, which he hosted this October. Per Billboard, it was held in Chicago and hosted the Swedish House Mafia as headliners. All the proceeds raised were bequeathed to the comedian cum actor’s Cancer For College organization. The establishment raises scholarships for cancer survivors who cannot afford college.
As for the Kings, they’re slated to play at home on Wednesday, January 1st, in a face-off against the New Jersey Devils. It remains to be seen if Will Ferrell makes a comeback, and in what alter ego.
