"When you think about Shakopee, you think about driving south across the river and going to Valleyfair, it's an iconic location and it screams Shakopee," said Erik Radtke, the communications chair for the local organizing committee in Shakopee. "When they became enthusiastic partners in this, the event got more exciting. To be able to work with Valleyfair, their staff, and team, they don't have a lot going on in the winter, but this is going to be really epic for them. It creates a really neat opportunity of us to do something special and unique for this Hockey Day."
Hockey Day Minnesota 2025 is the 19th annual Hockey Day Minnesota. Game times will be announced at a later day.
"There's so much prep high school hockey in Minnesota," Radtke said. "To be able to highlight so many great programs, it now pulls in those communities, a lot of them in the south and west metro. They're a lot of our neighbors that we've grown up with. A lot of these hockey programs, we've known each other since these kids were skating together in third grade. Now for all of them to come together, their teams, fans, and parents it really turns it into a special event for our state."
Hockey Day 2025 wraps-up Saturday night with the Minnesota Wild hosting the Calgary Flames at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
“It’s our pleasure to announce the date and matchups for Hockey Day Minnesota 2025,” said Stacey Langemo, Hockey Day Minnesota 2025 Chair. “We are thrilled about the matchups and expect competitive hockey being played throughout the weekend here at one of Minnesota’s most iconic locations.”
Hockey Day Minnesota began in 2007 by the Minnesota Wild to celebrate the game.
"We want this to be more than about hockey," Radtke said. "It is about when communities come together to create an event. We recognize there's an opportunity in the diversity community to grow the game, to reach out to new communities who might not think of themselves as immediately ready to put on skates. Our DEI initiative has been real intentional. We have a dedicated committee working on those initiatives."
Radtke added there's a focus this year on mental health and substance abuse.
"Mental health is a significant thing high schools, high school sports, and hockey communities. If we're going to do an event like this and gathers tens of thousands of people, let's do something can leave a legacy. We want this to be about more than just hockey."
