Utah falls at home

The Hockey Club’s three-game winning streak was snapped over the weekend when they fell to the New Jersey Devils 3-1 in front of the home crowd. Defenseman Mikhail Sergachev tied the game at one with his 11th goal of the season in the second period, but goalie Karel Vejmelka gave up two goals to the Devils in the final period on the way to his 15th loss. The Devils have lost only twice when leading after the first period. Center Liam O’Brien dished out his second assist of the year in the loss. The Hockey Club fell two games behind the Flames for the final Wild Card spot. Utah’s goaltending has been on point recently, limiting their opponents to three goals or less in four straight contests.

Sergachev on the loss to New Jersey:

“Obviously, they’re a great team,” said Sergachev. “They’re pretty fast, too. So it was like two fast teams out there. They just scored more than we did.”

Red Wings fall at home

The Red Wings lost their third straight contest on Tuesday evening when they fell to the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 at home. Carolina went up 1-0 in the first period and never looked back. LW Elmer Soderblom scored his third goal of the season in the loss for the Red Wings. Goalie Alex Lyon lost his seventh game by allowing two goals on 30 Carolina shots on net. Detroit dropped to 16-14-3 while playing in front of the home crowd. The Red Wings are one point behind the New York Rangers for the Eastern Conference’s final Wild Card spot. Detroit’s offense has struggled recently, failing to exceed three goals in four straight games.

Key injuries: Centers Michael Rasmussen and Andrew Copp remain out with injuries.
Insiders Status:

The Hockey Club has struggled against Atlantic Division opponents in their inaugural season, losing at a 66.7% clip. They have also lost over 50% of their games on the road and fallen in two of their previous three away games. Utah’s offense has failed to exceed two goals in three of their last four contests. Detroit has been a solid bet this season, winning 37 out of 61 games against the spread, while Utah has a losing record ATS.
Detroit has come out on top in 55% of their games at Little Ceasars Arena since December 1. The Red Wings have been effective on the power play this year, ranking second in the league with a 29.3% success rate. The stats and trends strongly support a comfortable Red Wings victory at home on Thursday.
Take Detroit against the spread.
Insiders Status:

Both squads rank in the bottom half of the NHL in average goals scored per game, so the odds of either team scoring quickly in bunches are low. Detroit skaters have failed to exceed three goals in four straight games and three of four in front of the home crowd.
Utah’s goaltenders rank in the top half of the NHL in multiple defensive categories, including average goals allowed per game with 2.93. Utah has gone under the goal total in three of their previous four contests and failed to exceed two goals in three of their last four. Their goaltenders have limited their opponents to three goals or less in four straight games. Most signs point to a lower-scoring affair in Detroit on Thursday.
Take the under.
