(Alexandria, MN) — Senior forward Quinn Hills snapped a 1-1 tie with a game-winning goal in the second overtime to give the Alexandria Cardinals a one-goal win over Buffalo in Thursday’s quarterfinal game in the Section 8AA Girls’ Hockey Tournament.
In the Section 8AA Girls’ Hockey Quarterfinal game at the PrimeWest Health Runestone Community Center Thursday evening, senior Quinn Hills made her 13th goal of the season count. It turned into the game-winning score in a 2-1 Alexandria win over the visiting Buffalo Bison. Hills received a pass from line mate Anna Korynta from the neutral zone. Then after using her speed to race into the Buffalo zone, Hills sent an elevated shot past Bison goaltender Tessa Quale at 6:17 of the second overtime to give Alexandria the win.
Each team scored once during regulation play, and both goals were scored in less than a two-minute time frame. Emily Doherty fed a centering pass to fellow sophomore Maya Dutton, who blasted a one-timer past Quale at the 10:18 mark of the second period. Less than two minutes later at the 12:09 mark, Buffalo found an equalizer, as freshman forward Violet Huddy scored shorthanded. Junior defenseman Piper Stodola assisted on the score.
The Lady Cardinals’ senior goalie, Victoria Meyers, made 17 saves in the victory. Quale, her Buffalo counterpart, racked up 50 saves.
The Bison, seeded sixth in Section 8AA, finished the year with a final record of 7-14-5. Alexandria will take a 19-5-1 mark to the Moorhead Sports Center Saturday evening to face the Spuds in the Section 8AA Semifinal round. The 6:00 game will air on KXRA Radio (1490 AM/100.3 FM/105.7 FM), with live video broadcast coverage on The Voice of Alexandria streaming channel on YouTube. Pre-game coverage will start approximately 30 minutes prior to the play-by-play.
