DULUTH, Minn.- The Hibbing/ Chisholm boys hockey storybook season continued last night as the Bluejackets took down top-seeded Cloquet/Esko/Carlton in the section 7A title game.
In the third period, the Lumberjacks took a 3 to 2 lead after a goal from Niko Gentilini, but the Bluejackets were unfazed as Cole Swanson finds the back of the net to tie things up at three to force overtime.
In OT, Swanson spots the freshman Whitaker Rewertz open out in front and he knocks it in to punch the Bluejackets’ ticket to the state tournament for the first time since 2011 with a 4 to 3 win over C-E-C.
“It was a grind, we had one of the best sections in the state and the boys found a way. Cloquet is a great team, I thought that they outplayed us two of the periods. We picked it up a little bit in the third. But our goalie played outstanding and in overtime the boys found a way,” said head coach Aaron Jamnick.
For Rewertz, scoring the game winning goal to send your team to state was a lifelong dream.
“It’s definitely a dream come true to get that goal. It went into the zone, I went hard to the net, Cole dangled their D and made a great play and tapped it back door and I was fortunate enough to be there to tap it in,” said Rewertz.
The Bluejackets will find out their first opponent at the state tournament on Saturday, March 1st.
