HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – You may think that Hawaii and hockey don’t always make sense in the same sentence. However, despite being home to only one ice rink, the sport’s popularity in our state has been steadily growing.
“We lived in Kapolei for five years before we knew this place was here,” said Marcie Dela Cruz as she watched her six children skating around one of two rinks at Kapolei Inline Hockey Arenas or HIKA for short.
Dela Cruz and her husband Raymond have six children total, including quintuplets who all found something they love in the sport of hockey.
“It was amazing watching them all start to develop their skills and really get into it,”added Dela Cruz.
Big brother Makaia looks after his quintuplet siblings with pride and only the slightest (loving) annoyance at times. He’s just a year older and when asked what it’s like being the oldest of the pack he answered “hard” with a smile.
The four boys and one girl that make up the hockey quintuplets are Keahi, Kupono, Kamalii, Kaolu and Kapena — they’ve all found a home and a safe place to chase their dream at HIKA.
Watching them get better and better and develop their skills. Here has been so cool. We call it Dela mania,” said Doug Jones, Director of Hockey Operations at HIKA.
Jones is a life long hockey fan and a former player who is passionate about sharing his love of the game with young people. He specially cherishes the opportunity to bring it kids in a place where opportunities to play are relatively limited.
“We have such a wonderful facility here and I think if you looked at similar places on the mainland you’d see, our facility is just as good if not better than some of the bigger arenas there,” Jones added proudly.
Hawaii Inline Hockey Arenas also offer opportunities to learn to skate and free skate sessions.
