Who will take the gold medal in the men’s hockey final between the U.S. and Canada? NBC Philadelphia’s Jordan Hall previews the much anticipated game.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said she wants all New Yorkers to be able to get together to cheer on Team USA in the men’s hockey final at the Olympics, so she’s allowed bars and restaurants to open early just for the occasion.
Just not for New York City. Or anywhere under the state of emergency she declared on Saturday ahead of the storm.
The governor said in a statement that she is suspending alcohol service hours enforcement on Sunday between the hours of 6 a.m.-10 a.m. That will allow bars and restaurants to open early (and perhaps as important, serve alcohol) in order to host watch parties as the U.S. takes on Canada in the gold medal match.

“I still remember watching the 1980 game as a college student at Syracuse University, working in a pizza shop. The whole place stopped and watched together. I hope a new generation of New Yorkers gets that same moment tomorrow,” Hochul said in the statement.
However, it does not apply to any bars or restaurants in areas that are under the state of emergency. That includes NYC, Long Island, the Hudson Valley and anywhere that is set to get walloped by a nor’easter that intensified quickly since Friday morning.
“Our top priority remains keeping people in communities impacted by the blizzard safe and off the roads,” she said in the statement.
