Morgan Kivel and Jane Volgren scored first period goals, and Katelyn Gustafson stopped 22 of the 23 shots she faced, to lift the fifth-ranked St. Croix Valley Fusion to a 2-1 victory over the No. 6 Western Wisconsin Stars in a Big Rivers Conference girls hockey game Tuesday night in River Falls.
The victory snapped the Stars’ six-game winning streak and moved the Fusion into a four-way tie for first place in the BRC with Western Wisconsin, Chippewa Falls/Menomonie and Eau Claire Area, all at 3-2.
Both St. Croix Valley goals Tuesday night came in the first period. Kivel opened the scoring with a breakaway goal 2 minutes, 15 seconds in, with an assist from Lauren Lindus, while Volgren’s team-leading 17th goal of the season came unassisted at the 7:36 mark.
After being held to just one shot on goal in the opening period, the Stars outshot the Fusion 14-5 in the second period but had just one goal to show for it– a Gabby Thomsen power play goal on a blast from the point at the 8:46 mark. Ashley Jensen and Izzy Johnson earned assists on the play.
Gustafson stopped all eight shots she faced in a penalty-free third period to preserve the Fusion’s 2-1 win. All five penalties in the game went against the Fusion, with the Stars going 1-for-5 on the power play.
St. Croix Valley, now 11-8-0 overall, will play three games in three days later this week– all on the road– beginning with a conference matchup at Hudson Thursday night. They’ll travel to Neenah to face the Fox Cities Stars Friday night and visit Fond du Lac for a Saturday afternoon game before wrapping up the regular season with conference games against Eau Claire Area Tuesday, Feb. 4, in Baldwin and Thursday, Feb. 6 in Chippewa Falls.
Western Wisconsin, now 8-10-1 overall, will visit Park of Cottage Grove Friday night and return to conference play Monday, Feb. 3 at Chippewa Falls and Tuesday, Feb. 4, against Hudson in Somerset. They’ll wrap up BRC play Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Eau Claire and conclude the regular season Friday, Feb. 14, at third-ranked Superior.
