The week of Sept.15-19, members of the Houston Works Crew were preparing the ice for the expected first day of use to be Sept.23.
The four employees started with laying a 1/4 inch of ice onto the Claude Parish Memorial Arena's cement slab. Then, a process of spraying six layers of white ice paint begins.
The bag of powder added to the pressured water distributor is actually called "white ice paint" and this is why the ice appears white. Those layers are sealed with a layer of regular ice.
Then the crew will measure and lay down coloured felt circles and lines that give the proper markings for hockey. This is sealed with the top layers of ice that all add up to approximately 3/4 inch of ice to set.
