Verona may have temporarily escaped the drop zone with last week’s dramatic 3-2 win over in-form Bologna. However, let’s note a few key things from that match. One is that Bologna was down to 10 men after the 51st minute. The score was tied (2-2) when Tommaso Pobega was sent off. Then, it was a Bologna own-goal (in the 88th minute) that handed Verona all three points, arguably quite undeserved given that they lost the xG battle by a pretty substantial margin (2.86 to 0.80). Understat still has Verona last in the league in xPts (expected points) and they are also dead last in xGD (expected goal difference).
Truth be told, Verona was fortunate to escape relegation last season as they had the second fewest number of xPts and were also near the bottom in xGD. This has simply been a bad club for some time now. They easily have Serie A’s worst defensive record with 42 goals conceded and have yet to keep a single clean sheet in 15 league matches this season. Furthermore, Verona has lost three straight at home while getting outscored on aggregate 10-1. They have yet to draw once here at the Stadio Bentegodi, so I’ll take my chances fading the Gialloblu here, knowing if things were to finish even, our bet would push.
Udinese barely survived relegation themselves last season, finishing 15th, but underlying metrics suggested they were better than their record. Even though they are pretty firmly a mid-table side (9th) this season, I certainly don’t see them losing this one. They should have won last week, but had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Torino after conceding the final two goals . But remember before that, Udinese beat top five Fiorentina (2-1) away. A curious stat for this team is that they have scored the second most “headers” (8) in all of Europe’s top five leagues, trailing only Serie A leaders Atalanta.

A week later it would be absolutely criminal to give him a heavy workload against 2nd and 3rd string players on a Cleveland team that is expected to provide little resistance. The Ravens are a 20-point favorite here, and this game should be over at halftime. If Henry gets more than a dozen carries, Harbaugh should be institutionalized.

This is the largest spread of any of the Sunday NFL games. I believe it’s a little too high. The Bucs will clinch the NFC South with a win. The Saints have nothing to play for. I don’t expect them to just roll over for a divisional opponent though. The Bucs beat the Saints 51-27 in the first meeting. (The Saints were up 27-24 at half.) That was the only divisional game all season that the Saints weren’t competitive in though. They were 2-2 in their other four divisional games but both the losses came by two points or less. They’ve actually outscored NFC South opponents overall, even including the Tampa loss.
Both Carr and Kamara remain questionable, as of this writing. However, both want to play and that says something about the Saints overall mindset for this game. They’re coming to play. Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi said this: “I know there’s probably some fans out there, why the heck would you play Alvin Kamara? Why the heck would you play Derek Carr? These guys want to play and it’s my job to respect their wishes. Both these guys are captains, are leaders. They’ve been unbelievable for our locker room. And the fact of the matter is you know, we’re 5-5 this year with Derek Carr as our starting quarterback. We’re 0-5 without him and that’s just it. We can slice and dice however many ways we want, the bottom line is we’ve won five games with Derek at quarterback. We’ve lost five and three of those five games that we lost were by three points or less, because he gives us the best chance to win.” *Good at +13 or better

How badly does New Orleans want to play spoiler? On the surface, the answer appears to be “pretty badly.” Tampa Bay will clinch the NFC South with a win. The Saints’ trio of Derek Carr, Chris Olave and Alvin Kamara all returned to some level of practice last week prior to the game against the Raiders, but none of the three ended up playing. You can certainly understand Carr’s desire to play against his former team, but the other two were a little surprising. Running back Keandre Miller suffered a concussion and linebacker Jaylan Ford suffered a broken leg in that loss to the Raiders, further chopping an already-depleted roster. By all indications, Carr, Kamara and Olave are going to practice once again this week, and Olave is petitioning for an opportunity to play even though he still has not been medically cleared from his own concussion. Keep an eye on the status of that trio through out this week. If those three are on track to play, then this number is too high. Tampa Bay has only closed as a favorite of more than a touchdown one time this season: Last week against Carolina. The Bucs closed as a seven-point home favorite against the Raiders four weeks ago. The Raiders just closed a tick above a pick’em in New Orleans last week. So the betting market has already said that there is not much separating the Raiders and Saints. Why is Tampa Bay laying -7 against one and -13.5 against the other?

Kansas City has already clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC. In Monday’s press conference, Andy Reid said that he has not made a final decision about what to do with his starters, but it is widely believed that Patrick Mahomes will have the day off and Carson Wentz will get the nod. The Broncos will clinch a playoff berth with a win, or losses by both Cincinnati and Miami. The Bengals play on Saturday, so Denver will know where they stand for half of that equation heading into this one. Kansas City is no stranger to being in this situation in years’ past. The Chiefs rested everyone in Week 18 last year in Los Angeles against the Chargers, and still won with Blaine Gabbert at quarterback. “Must win” for the Broncos certainly does not mean “must cover.” With the increasing number of injuries through out the NFL, back-up players get more playing time during the course of the season. Players like Travis Kelce will likely get the day off, but have you seen Justin Watson and Noah Gray? Those guys are pretty good, too. Between that tight end duo and a wide receiver room that features Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy, Deandre Hopkins and Juju Smith-Schuster, Wentz will still have plenty of options to work with.

It’s time for one of our favourite bets in the Ligue 1, in the match between Lyon and Montpellier on Saturday, 3pm ET, and it’s none other than Alexandre Lacazette to score against this team. Montpellier are Lacazette’s favourite team to score against, as he has scored the most goals against them than any other team in his career, with 15 goals (and 8 assists) in 16 matches in all competitions.
Lacazette scored in each of L/4 matches against Montpellier since he re-joined the team after his stint at Arsenal, a total of 7 goals (and 1 assist) in those 4 matches alone. He isn’t a regular starter for Lyon, although he did start in 15 of 19 matches for Lyon this season, scoring 8 goals and 2 assists in all competitions, and his 5 league goals mean that he is still the top scorer for Lyon in league matches this season.
Montpellier are sitting dead last with a bad defense that is allowing the most Shots/90 (15.27) and the 3rd most Shots on Target/90 (5.27), while Lacazette is leading Lyon in Shots (24) and Shots on Target (15), while in his L/3 starts he had 4 shots (2 on target), 3 shots (2 on target) and 5 shots (5 on target), so the volume is there.
Montpellier have conceded 38 goals so far (average of 2.53 conceded goals/game) and 19 in 7 away matches (average of 2.71 conceded goals/away game), conceding 2+ goals in 6 of 8 and conceding 3+ goals in 4 of 8 away matches. The only two teams that didn’t score at least 2 goals against them are the two teams sitting right above them in the standings, Le Havre and St Etienne, everyone else has scored at least two goals on them, so that’s another reason why we like Lacazette here.

This matchup between the Bills and Patriots features two teams wrapping up difficult seasons but in vastly different circumstances. The Bills, having clinched the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, are expected to rest their starters and roll with backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Meanwhile, the Patriots are simply playing for pride and player evaluations, with rookie Drake Maye expected to start under center. Despite the changes, the Bills’ depth and overall talent edge make them the stronger side in this contest.
Buffalo’s backups, led by Trubisky, will face a Patriots defense that has struggled all season, ranking 26th in points allowed at 25.1 per game. The Bills’ offense, even without their starters, should be able to find success against a defense giving up over 130 rushing yards per game. With players eager to prove their value and a well-coached system in place, the Bills have the tools to control the game, particularly on the ground and in short, efficient passing situations.
On the other side, the Patriots’ offense has been one of the worst in the league, averaging just 16.6 points per game. With a rookie quarterback and a limited receiving corps, New England is unlikely to keep pace, even against Buffalo’s reserve defenders. The Bills’ depth, combined with their ability to execute effectively on both sides of the ball, makes them the better bet to cover the -3 spread. Expect Buffalo to manage the game well and capitalize on New England’s inefficiencies.
