The 2025 IIHF World Championship group round continues on Tuesday with its third game of the preliminary round, featuring Canada’s National Men’s Team and France.
Canada enters the matchup riding on the high of a 7-1 blowout against Latvia on Sunday, while France couldn’t muster a win over Finland despite an intense battle on the ice, falling 4-3.
The two teams have played against each other 15 times, but Canada holds the lead 13-2, snagging a win against France in their last meeting back in 2022. The Canadians could certainly add to that column this time around with the talented and versatile roster they boast.
Travis Konecny and Nathan McKinnon have two goals and two assists each in the tournament so far, sitting tied for fifth in tournament scoring. Konecny is currently coming off his best NHL season so far, accounting for 24 goals and 76 total points during his time with the Philadelphia Flyers.
France has been primarily relying on special teams to gain momentum, scoring two power-play goals versus Finland to gain a 2-1 lead early. Goalkeeper Antoine Keller made 47 saves for the French, yet it wasn’t enough to hinder Finland from scoring a few late goals to send the game into overtime, broken by Finland’s final blow. Keller currently has a save percentage of .894 at just 20 years old and could be the key to shutting out a fierce Canadian squad.

Both opponents have been physical on the ice, and Canada suffered a huge deflection that saw some players take a spill. Neither have been able to generate a successful shot the entire period, and Canada remains in front.
A steal from Canada highlights trouble at the French goal, but a deflection from France allowed it to bring it all the way to an open Canada goal. However, the French were unable to capitalize.
Canada has taken a dominant lead, while France has been unable to connect for a goal thanks to Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington making some key saves.
