Cornell women’s ice hockey began their season on the road, and the men have so far faced preseason contests, but the Big Red hockey season begins in earnest this weekend with a pair of home contests for each team, for a total of four hockey games at Lynah Rink on Friday and Saturday.

The women began their season two weeks ago with a tie and a loss at Mercyhurst University, an annual two-game series that alternates between Ithaca and Erie each season. They then participated in the Icebreaker Tournament in Columbus, Ohio, blanking Penn State 2-0 last Friday afternoon in the opening round before falling to host Ohio State, the defending national champions, by a 7-3 score in the title game on Saturday. Friday’s win was sophomore netminder Annelies Bergmann’s sixth career shutout.
It’s straight to work for the women, who face their first pair of ECAC foes in visiting Union and Rensselaer.
For the men, preseason play has featured a scrimmage against the Princeton Tigers two weeks ago, and an exhibition against the University of Toronto last Saturday. The Big Red came away with winning scores on both nights. It was a first chance to see new associate head coach and heir apparent Casey Jones back on the bench with outgoing head coach Mike Schafer.

They host the University of North Dakota for a pair of non-conference games to start their regular season. Friday night’s game, which will be televised on SNY in addition to streaming on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet, will feature a costume contest, and Saturday’s game is a “Red Out” event, where Cornell hopes fans will all wear red.
This weekend, the women play at 3pm Friday and Saturday and the men play at 7pm Friday and Saturday, with all games at Lynah Rink, on Campus Road on the Cornell University campus. Tickets are available at bigredtix.com.
