A gauntlet is defined as a challenge or a form of punishment. While I’m not sure what John Tortorella did to NHL schedule makers, his Philadelphia Flyers got the short end of the stick with their recent patch against Carolina, Washington, Dallas, and Tampa Bay twice.
Things don’t get much easier on Tuesday when the Flyers face the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+) to end an unforgiving stretch against Stanley Cup odds contenders.
Our Flyers vs. Maple Leafs prediction and picks feature three player props while expecting Toronto to end Philadelphia’s gauntlet with a knockout blow.
Here are my best Flyers vs. Maple Leafs predictions and player props for tonight’s NHL matchup with my pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale. Be sure to check out the rest of our NHL picks along with our guide on how to bet on NHL.
Here’s how the action has been coming in during the hours before game time, via BetMGM.
As of 6 a.m. ET, the Maple Leafs are gigantic -245 moneyline favorites to beat the +200 Flyers in tonight’s NHL matchup from Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. I predict the Maple Leafs will win by at least two in a game with under six goals.
Here are the latest Flyers vs. Maple Leafs odds and betting lines from our best live betting sites.
The Maple Leafs haven’t played since Saturday, when they imploded on the road, conceding five straight in a 5-2 loss to the Nashville Predators. You can guarantee they’ll be markedly better in the second and third periods when they host a Flyers team that has suffered five consecutive setbacks.
The Flyers have lost four in a row on the road, too, falling to a who’s who of Stanley Cup contenders before their defensively woeful outing in Chicago on Sunday.
That 7-4 loss to the Blackhawks made it 10 defeats in the last 11 road games. Only the Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins sport a worse road points percentage in that timeframe.
Tortorella should turn to Samuel Ersson after giving his No. 1 netminder a rest in the Windy City. While Ersson has enjoyed a decent season considering what he’s up against, he has allowed at least three goals in six straight while allowing four goals twice and five once.
Toronto is looking to secure its first three-game home winning streak since the start of January. With the Atlantic Division still up for grabs, I expect Craig Berube to have his team ready. I’ll take a highly motivated Maple Leafs team over a demoralized, road-weary Flyers unit. I predict the Maple Leafs will win 4-1.
Best bet: Maple Leafs -1.5 (+110 via bet365)

Matthews is coming off a two-point performance in Nashville. While that’s promising, I’m more interested in his historical success against the Flyers. I have no doubt the Maple Leafs’ sniper circles these games on his calendar, as he has 11 points in the last five games against Philly, including four in two this season.
Entering Tuesday’s game, he posted at least two points in five straight against the Flyers. With an extra day’s rest and the playoffs approaching, I’m confident he’ll rise to the occasion again.
It’s rare to see one of our best sportsbooks secure a clean sweep, with bet365 taking the plaudits this time. As dominant as Matthews against the Flyers, bet365 offers the best price on all featured prop picks for this game.
Best odds: +145 via bet365 ($10 to win $14.50)
Akin to the Matthews pick, this is a situational play. Tavares has 31 assists in 63 games, notching a helper almost once every two games. He has an assist in two of his last three games but failed to register one in the preceding five contests. However, like his captain, Tavares feasts on Philly like an inebriated hockey fan on a Philly cheesesteak.
He has six points in the last three games against the Flyers, including four assists. Going back slightly further, Tavares notched six helpers against the Metropolitan Division foes in the previous six.
Best odds: +135 via bet365 ($10 to win $13.50)
I was tempted to go with a Maple Leafs clean sweep in the props department but recalled their recent ghastly midweek performance against the San Jose Sharks. With that in mind, I’m backing Konecny to fire at least three shots on presumed starter Anthony Stolarz. He hit the Over in three of his previous five games and four of the last six away encounters.
While those numbers are solid, if not excellent, his shot production is even more reliable against Toronto. He has at least four shots in five of the six straight against the Buds, hitting the Over every time. In that span, he’s averaged 4.17 shots.
