The Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals meet for the second time in 24 hours on Wednesday. The Capitals won 4-1 in Philadelphia on Tuesday, improving their record to 4-1 thanks to four straight victories.
Going in an entirely opposite direction, the Flyers lost their fifth straight and are reeling at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
Despite being relative long shots in the Stanley Cup odds, the Capitals have been ruthless in front of the net while earning one of the best records out of the starting gate.
While our Flyers vs. Capitals prediction expects the home team to pour more salt on the Flyers’ gaping wound, we’re focusing on three individual performances for the lone game on the schedule.
Odds via our best NHL betting sites; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale.
Best odds: -140 via Betway | Implied probability: 58.33%
Terms and conditions apply.
Completely drained of confidence, the Flyers only have themselves to blame for Tuesday’s home loss. They allowed two shorthanded goals in the first period, putting to bed any hope of securing their first win on home ice.
The Capitals only scored three shorthanded goals all last season, magnifying the Flyers’ first-period ineptitude. John Tortorella’s reaction after his team conceded the second shorthanded marker perfectly encapsulated how every Flyers fan felt waking up this morning.
While the Flyers usually play well against their division rivals, there’s too much to fix in a month, let alone 24 hours. I expect Philly to acquit themselves better on Wednesday, but that’s not saying much considering they mustered just 18 shots on goal.
A winning $10 bet will profit $7.14.
NHL picks made Wednesday; odds subject to change.
Best odds: +155 via Betway | Implied probability: 39.22%
Andrew Mangiapane has scored in the Caps’ last two games. He netted Washington’s second shorthanded goal on Tuesday and is brimming with confidence. The 28-year-old scored 35 goals with the Calgary Flames in 2021-22 and is averaging .58 points per game over the last three seasons.
I expect his current momentum to continue at home against a team that’s palpably out of sorts. A winning $10 bet will yield a profit of $15.50.
Best odds: -118 via Betway | Implied probability: 54.13%
Owen Tippett had registered four-plus shots in three straight games before notching only two on Tuesday. I expect Philadelphia to fire way more rubber on goal after such an anemic output, and Tippett should spearhead the charge. He leads the team with 19 shots in six games.
A winning $10 bet will profit $8.47.
Best odds: -115 via Betway | Implied probability: 53.49%
Tom Wilson was held off the scoresheet on Tuesday for the first time this season. He’s logged six points in five games and is second in team scoring behind Dylan Strome.
Wilson enjoyed success against the Flyers last season, scoring four points in three games. He tallied four points in the first two before being held pointless in the final clash of the season.
A winning $10 bet will yield an $8.70 profit.
Flyers-Capitals predictions made Wednesday at 9 a.m. ET.
